Are you sure you didn't have a faulty copy as the FE 55mm f1.8 is supposed to be a very snappy lens for AF :)
Having owned both the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 and Sony 85mm f1.4 GM I would say you can't go wrong with either :)
But doesn't the 12-40mm f2.9 equate to a f4/5.6 equivalent FF lens in terms of light gathering abilities?

I use the AF hold button for Eye-AF too, a big reason I prefer Sony.

I have owned the Sony A7RII in the past and the Eye-AF is pretty good, it will lose lock if the subject is moving too fast though. My best advice...
