I think the first one is about right colour wise, but there is a lot of shaded areas in that one.
I do use tone mapping sometimes. I find that very subtle use is all that is needed for mine though. I'm not into over doing it.

Compositionally I like number 2, but I feel the colours are a little odd. Have you tone mapped these Simon? Have you tried doing things a little more naturally? The Lakes have some wonderful colours this time of year, bringing them back to around the natural level may work wonders for the shots :)
