This is an update for anyone who experiences the same as I have.
After Bob's input I investigated further. I cleaned the top of the hot shoe and the contacts on the flash, with switch cleaner. Tried again and everything worked fine.
I took the flash off and put it back on again, this time...

I guessed that they should be compatible. I thought about trying a different camera and flash with a friend. I didn't want to screw their gear up though, in the process.

Does anyone know if a 550ex flash, is compatible or should be, with a 1D Mk2 camera.
I use a 24-70m L lens on the camera but none of the ETTL features work.
I can use the flash manualy and get the exposure right by trial and error.
I've got the latest firmware update on the camera...
