Don't have a Fuji but it must be a pretty small kit I guess... Buy a MTB backpack a little bit bigger than just for hydration, and wrap the camera inside? I have an old Deuter bag for when I bike.
I have a strap from the same brand (another model) and it has a very different way of attaching the camera. I'm glad it didn't happen to me but now you got me worried... As a matter of fact I also bought a very cheap wrist strap some weeks ago and tested it before attaching a camera.... Just a...
Years ago my bag got stolen with 2 cameras in it, one of them with a vintage lens attached. I looked at eBay and other sites for a long time, never found anything that looked like it could be my stuff.
Much cheaper than a 400mm f/2.8 though. In your scenario, if you can do manual focus and aperture priority with an aperture ring on the lens then its cheap. A dummy adapter and a used 16 megapixel Olympus or Lumix can be had well under 200 £/$/€. Not far from the price of a good teleconverter...

Any old DSLR with say 10mpix or more. Make sure you have also the budget for a basic flash (this will help with the limited ISO capabilities of these old beasts). I bought an Olympus E-510 body+double kit zooms+TTL flash last summer for... 80€. That leaves budget for another couple of lenses...
I guess you're talking about the rubber thingy right? All of the A bodies share the same I think. But you can use the camera without it pretty much OK.
