    Canon 24-105mmL v Canon 50mm EF 1.8 for portraits

I've owned both. Personally I didn't think there was much in it for IQ and colour accuracy. Key difference (excluding the ability of the 24-105 to zoom) was in the DOF opportunities that the prime provides. My 50mm was dead sharp from F2.5 (not so hot at F2.2 or lower). For all that, I didn't...

    Canon 85mm 1.8 Lens

Love mine, pin sharp from F2 and smaller. At F1.8, not quite as good, but it's much better than say my 24-105 was at F4 (and F4.5, and F5). As it happens, I've been settled on just two walkaround lenses now for over a couple of years, both primes and one of them is my 85mm F1.8. Just love it.

    50D -> 5D 'classic' do i do it?

Don't stick with just zooms. A real area of benefit from going FF is the DOF and the associated benefit of bokeh. Do see if you can replace your 50mm with an 85mm F1.8. Additionally, whilst the IQ from the 50mm is pretty good, the 85mm IS better and it's AF is awesome.

    Mirco 4/3 vs Pro DSLR

I get the impression that the real differences in use are that a good DSLR like a 1D will have better AF and that an FF body will have roughly half the DOF of a micro-4/3rds camera. So for landscape, I see every reason why you'd not see substantial differences.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens

I bought one around 18 months ago. Spent so much time on my 5D that I ended up selling of my L zooms as I preferred the IQ from the 85mm. Also benefits from very fast and accurate AF. For the dosh, hard to beat.

    Tamron 17-50 non-VC or 3 primes?

How long is a piece of string. They do different jobs. IMO the primes have advantages in DOF and outright sharpness, clearly the zoom is more flexible for framing the image. I've been through a series of L series Canon zooms and have recently settled on just three primes, i.e. a 35mm, 85mm...

Nikon, Canon, Pentax et al, any affected by impact from tsunami

There's been a number of comments in the press about the auto industry and also Apple being potentially affected by supplies of kit as a result of the terrible after effects from the Japanese quake and tsunami. Anyone know if any of the camera makes are affected? If so, would be sensible to...

    New lens Canon f2.8 zoom

Tell her it was on special offer and accidentally drop a zero from the backend of the price. She'll still think it's expensive.

    TC vs Long prime

Can't say I was impressed with the TC that I used to own. MUCH preferred the 400mm prime that I owned for a couple of years. Awesome AF and VERY sharp. Not that it's an option for you as you're a Nikon owner, but I assume they have something very similar.

    5D Classic Lens Collection

I moved to the 35mm/85mm combo and love them. Sure, they're a compromise when compared to zooms, but I like them so much that I've been ditching all of my L zooms (well at least when I finally sell my 24-105).

Got Canon 1D lust, help needed!

I have owned a 1D and now have a 5D. Have to say that I also loved the 1D. I make myself feel a little better now by consoling myself with much lower weight/size, which makes it more user friendly for my missus.

    Mirror lenses?

In years gone by, I owned a Tamron SP500 F8. Can't say I was very impressed. More recently, I owned a Canon 400 F5.6 (NOT a mirror lens). OK, it was a LOT more expensive, but then it did have ace AF. More importantly, the IQ was VERY Good. Personally I'd suggest you save your pennies and...

    40D to GF1? Update.....

I've looked very seriously at a micro 4/3rds several times, I keep coming back to the fact that I don't like the compromise on for example the DOF that using a 2:1 crop sensor would involve. So I've recently moved from zooms to just primes. I've already sold my 70-200F4L and will shortly be...

Canon 5D MK I 'classic' - owners thread

I moved from an old 1D to my 5D a couple of years ago. Have to say that I love it. Does require more forethought to get it to work than the 1D as it's clearly not as good in AF or metering. Ref the AF, I now shoot almost always in AI Servo with the centre spot, but with the AF function moved...

    Leica M*

I had a quick play with a relative's M9 that he recently took delivery of. Have to say that it's absolutely lovely. Size wise, just a bit bigger than a Panny GF1. The manual focus system seems fairly easy to use, definitely better than the split prism system in my old Nikon 35mm. The...
