I had the Nikon 300F4. Soldi IT and bought a 120-300 2.8 non OS plus a sigma x2 TC for a trip to Scotland . Great combination and as an old photographer used to manual everything in my distant past, I don't miss the OS. I use it either handheld or tripod mounted.

As an alternative, have you considered an older non OS version of the 2.8 120-300mm lens. This can be fitted with a TC for increased focal length. I purchased an old model with a 2x and will add a 1.4 and or1.7 to this, Prices for the older models can start from£750 ish so not to much more...

That is the big problem with "trial by Internet" Gary. Innocence as well as innocent until PROVEN guilty seems to be just an inconvenient delay for the lynch mob mentality.

I used to own the 300 f4 AF-S. It worked fine with both the 1.4 and 1.7 Nikon Tc's. However for the used price you are also in the range of the Sigma 120-300 2.8 which takes a2xTC with no AF problems.
