If cost is a factor have you considered a welding glass? Couple of quid and slides in the cokin filter holder perfectly.

I did a load of scanning and restoration, a few years back, on a load of old family photos. Bought a book... 'Digital restoration from start to finish'. Extremely happy with the results. And in the process it taught me a lot about photoshop.
Good sharpness and tone, though detail seems lost both in the highlights outside the window and the shadows on the dogs back.
My personal preference would be for a little more space above and especially in front of his head - it would allow some room for us to follow his gaze a little.

Surely all photographs have some degree of pre and post processing. You decide what film speed/ISO, what aperture, what shutter speed. What lighting or time of day you'll utilise. Everything is a choice toward making an image that you want.

I have to agree with the previous two replies. There's just too much background distraction in the colour image, which dissappears in B&W. I do like the use of DOF... he projects toward the viewer.
Hi Ian, I like your pic too. Mine was something like a minute exposure at ISO 200 on f16 (if memory serves) as the sun was almost setting. I have to agree about Winchelsea beach, though i'm yet to spend a whole day observing the complete tidal range. Have you found the old lifeboat house...
