A trick some of us Astro photographers use is pre focusing at invinty.
Basically, during the day, focus on something far enough away so that you’re at infinity, then either take a note of where the focus marker is on the lens, or use bit of tape with a mark on it.. that way, at night, focusing...
It's been quite a while since my last post, which to be fair, also happened to be the MilkyWay lol
Anyway, this is oldie for me, and I was over the moon when it got commended and also appeared in the Landscape Photographer of the year 2015 book.

I trust you're looking at it on a fully calibrated monitor? My monitor is and also matches my printer's monitor/printer profiles - Although with an image like this, for print I'll add a little curves adjustment to lift the shadows light if he suggests it...
