First shots with my SLR

My granddad is a photographer and I've always been incredibly interested in what he does. Unfortunately, I can't spend much time with him at the moment so it's hard to get any pointers. But I've recently bought my first half decent camera (only a Nikon D3100, but that's all I can afford for the time being) with the standard VR 18-55 lens kit. These pictures are taken in a pub garden randomly whilst having a drink for the royal wedding. They're all taken in auto mode because I don't feel confident enough to mess around with the settings at the moment, and I know they're far from great. The reason I'm posting them is to hopefully get a few pointers of what I'm doing obviously wrong and hopefully I can avoid doing that in future. I don't want to start shooting with bad habits.

Thanks a lot for any help.

Welcome to tp

Don't knock yourself, portraits are not my thing but you have caught your subjects in focus and displaying their character.

I would suggest you learn all the controls on your camera and shoot it often, never take too many images. Read crits and have a go yourself. Your opinion is just as valid as anyone else.

Read books, search on here there are some recommendations so raid the local library ;)

...only a Nikon D3100
:nono:;)

Trust me, I've seen some superb photographs taken with entry level compacts, never mind a very capable D3100....

You've got off to a good start.

Basically, what Tina said...(y)

Hope to see more of your photographs and welcome aboard...

Cheers.

I agree the auto mode has done a nice job. Keep taking pics see what you like and dont like in the results and try to replicate the ones you like. Read books which will give you the skills to take over the controls helping to get your desired results.

Hi Ben,

The photos are great and the Nikon D3100 will be a great camera in your hands. What you must remember is that, with digital photography, not only do you have to know the basic principles of photography but you have to acquaint yourself with camera in order to achive what you want from it.

Take lots of photos, spend as much time as possible getting to know the camera and, above all, have fun!

Simon

Thank you all for the responses, seems like a great community on this forum. I've just made a photo in the "pets" section with some photographs I took of my dog, if anyone is interested in that type of photography please take a look at the thread and give me some C&C. A link to the thread is below. Thanks again!

great shot..... auto is often poopooed by a lot of amateur togs, yet a lot of pros will happily use it as it usually does a good job and frees them up to concentrate on the image - though of course in some instances this will wreck your day.

the one thing I'd suggest would be a reflector as all the images look a little shadowy in the face and rather than use a fill in flash, a simple piece of white card or proper reflector angled right would bounce enough light back to balance the light better.

Good luck budy, just be carefull in future to make faces in sun not a ears ;)
