Anyone got any idea what camera took this picture of Barack Obama by Nadav Kander?

The dynamic range is impressive, as is the details the post processing has brought out of the darks. I would have thought a medium format Hasselblad HD-40 or 60? Would certainly be interested in knowing. There's nothing to glean from EXIF data.

How in gods name did he get person of the year?

Well, he won a Nobel peace prize too so anything's possible. Anyway, back to the topic. ;)

Hopefully he sorts what none before him have, this year - the gun laws, then he'll be deserving.

On topic, I imagine most advanced dslrs are capable of pulling such detail from shadows. I took a 'selfie' a couple of years back, one side of my face was complete black on the RAW file, I was able to pull back the hidden eye completely, with no loss of detail.

Person of the year acknowledges what the magazine considers to be the world’s biggest newsmaker.

That is how.

Extraordinary. So in 1940 Hitler would have won it?

And the people vote for 2012 went to Kim Jong-un. Also, Stalin has won it as well as Hitler mentioned above, but worse than that - George W Bush has also won it.

I'm speechless.

Which for someone with 8,000 posts is something!

Looks like a photo of a waxwork from Madame Tussaurds to me!

Godwin's law got evoked pretty quickly in this thread! :)

Hasselblad, for sure. I really can't see even a D800 having that much tonal range. It's a wonderful image, although it's been worked on so heavily that I agree that it almost appears computer generated.

As for Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize before he'd even put his name on the desk, it did make a mockery of the Nobel committee. Even more so taking into account his actions since the award. Then they did something even more silly this year, giving the entire EU the prize! History will judge him kindly, no doubt. Because he'll be writing it ;)

I need a Hasselblad.

I'm betting a D800 could do it. I must do another half-lit selfie ...

:D
