Sigma 150-600mm contemporary

Thanks for the photos.

Whats the ISO on the last shot of the plane? Is it ISO 200 as per my EXIF viewer? Seems very grainy/noisey when viewed large. Maybe a big crop?? The swan portrait looks a lot cleaner in comparison.

What was your feelings about the lens in general, I'm considering this along with the Tamron version in Nikon mount. The Canon ones are hitting the shelves I believe and the Nikon ones are due in May if my memory serves me right.

looks good to me mic ,you got that m.a spot on

Plane is noisy as I underexposed the shot. I like the lens, seems to be sharp and the AF is fast even on the 550D. Cannot wait to get one for my Nikon cameras...

Thanks for the reply.

Is the Nikon mount going to be May when they hit the shelves?? Just bought another D750 so waiting on this before deciding between the two Sigmas and Tamron.

:agree: Nice to see how it performs in real world situations.

Interested in purchasing this lens but theres only a handful of reviews out there, so thanks micloi for posting your images as I'm leaning towards this rather than the Tamron, are any of the images sharpened, as they look pretty good as they are, if just straight out of camera I'm very impressed

I had pre-ordered my Nikon fit of the Contemporary, will also have an usb dock and 1.4x tele. Can't wait till get them all together, will then post test pictures here.

Only my normal editing as I shoot raw. Jpg out of the camera should look good enough for you if you prefer not to shoot in raw.

I use raw also and I was just wondering how sharp they were before sharpening, in saying that they must be decent to get them this sharp, look forward to seeing more of this quality from you well done

The sport was Nikon fit, the contemporary Canon fit. Just got the contemporary to test it but I like it so will sell the Canon one and get the Nikon fit one in May

Sold the sport as the new Nikon pf can do pretty much the same job with a much smaller size and weight.

Only difference between the sport and contemporary from my short tests is the extra AF options when using the dock (normal, quick or precise). Image quality seems very close to call.

Wow, Michael! It's really neat of you being able test out these lenses first hand. Thanks for your feedback and information! :ty:
Cheers, John

Hi Mike.
Please excuse me if I seem a bit thick but if you were not happy with the sport version why do you think the "C" version will suit you better?

Cheaper?

Less weight ... I want the lens for airshows mainly and hand holding a 3kg lens plus a gripped 7D all day is a non starter for me these days. I still don't know if the problem was with me or the Sport version (although I do think the OS was suspect on the one I had) but a lighter (and yes, if it does the same job ... cheaper) lens with this range would be a welcome addition to my kit.

Thanks Mike.
is it really as big a beast as you say?
I ordered one back in December but it's not for me it's for the missus. o_O
maybe I need to re-think this. LOL

Or have her start doing curls and lifting weights. :D

It weighs the same as my Canon EF 300mm f2.8 IS and 2x teleconverter and the problems only get worse as you extend the barrel, it becomes front heavy.

If your other half can lug the Sigma Sport around all day then she's a lot fitter than me (although hopefully to you she is anyway) ;)

LOL.
lets just say I wouldnt gve my missus any lip.
I use a 300 2.8 with the 2X and she finds that a touch heavy so maybe I should be looking at the "C" for her too.
Cheers Mike I'll have a chat with her.

Just ordered one for delivery tomorrow. Would have liked the Sport version, but seeing 95% of my shots are hand held, it is only 0.2kg heavier than my present Sigma 150-500mm.
Also the £600 price difference was hard to justify.

Looking forward to trying it out!

That's fantastic, Dougie! Looking forward to seeing your test pictures! :)

I have the Sigma 150-500mm so will be good how the 2 compare.
I will hopefully get out tomorrow afternoon, so will post the results later on.

Matt, quite a few stores now have it in stock, all the same price though!
I got mine from Digital Depot, as I have P/X my 150-500 at the same time. They offered £110 more in P/X than WEX did!

Thanks Dougie, good to know about the PX difference as well.

Anyone got a comparison between this and the Tamron 150-600 yet? Was in a camera shop today who had both but I didn't have time to try them both out !! lol AGHHHH,lol

Hopefully, someone will post some comparison shots soon! :D

Managed to get out with mine for an hour after work today.
The first bird I took was one of my favourites as well! First impression review to follow!

Wow, super capture, Dougie! :) ..may I ask, which camera did you use?

Cheers, John

The humble Canon 70D!

Thanks! That's great, you are using the same camera as Jeff who is on the Sigma Sport thread. Jeff uses the usb dock to fine tune his lens. You two should compare notes. :)

Cheers, John

Have the usb dock as well, still in its box though!
You can change far more on the Sport than the Contemporary though.
