Holga, Toy, Charity Shop, Car Boot and other Bargains (film only please)

Semi regular. Its with the computer junk, blank CD's usb fans that sort of thing.

Thanks mate - i've just bought 2nd hand film camera (from this lovely forum) and altho i bought some nice fuji film, i think i need some cheapo cheap to start off with. Used to work in Klickphotopoint (max spielman) in early 2000s when they basically gave it away, should have stocked up :)

is film at Poundland a regular occurance? what section do they put it? I've defected to B&M lately but no film there

Some have it some don't, if you are lucky you may find some Agfa Vista 400 which is a better class of film altogether, but it is generally Agfa Vista 200. Usually its in with the CD's and stuff.

Very regular, yes, but not in all of their branches. Only one of them on Queen's St Cardiff sells film, for example.

They're usually near the blank CDs, etc.

Edit: That was weird, didn't see any of the replies to that question until after I posted mine.

Funnily enough I had exactly the same experience, no replies there until I posted mine and then BOOM Steve & Dan's responses were there... spooky.

Don't knock it because it's cheap. I've got a Poundland Film Group on Flickr here. Lots of examples of scanned AgfaPhoto in there, and some handy discussions.

well not so much thinking that its crap cos its cheap, just that i wont be burning through cash taking photos which might be utter crapola until i know what i'm doing again (i always was intensely paranoid about my ability to load film properly!)

Just joined your group, Paul - I've got two rolls returning to me imminently, as I hope the colours came out nicely so didn't want to cross-process them.

If you speak with Andysnap,he may be able to obtain the services of Bentley to help you through the fog. :)

I recently bought an Auto Chinon 50mm f1.9 for £3.04 from eBay and a Ricoh XR Rikenon S 50mm f2.0 for £2.00 from a charity shop. I got the Ricoh lens for £2 because I noticed it wasn't focussing. I offered £2 to save it from the bin on the off chance I could fix it and as it is a charity. I haven't been able to fix it yet, which is a shame as I've read good things about the lens.

On the same trip I bought a Kodak Gear tripod from a charity shop don't go in much and was asked if I was a photographer. The woman serving said that they get lots of cameras in but they generally put them on eBay as bundles as they don't know if they work. I asked if she had any in and offered to check them out for her.

She came back with a carrier bag and the first thing I saw was an OM10 body, mirror half up, a bit grubby but OK. She then took it's 50mm lens out of the bag which needed cleaning, but had no fungus. I unscrewed the battery cap, eventually. The batteries had corroded so I cleaned out the compartment as best as I could and inserted my spare LR44 batteries. The mirror immediately returned to it's normal position, I checked the meter, which seemed fine and tested the shutter. The only other problem seemed to be the on off switch, which was very loose and moved at the slightest touch.

The manager of his shop was under the impression that people don't buy film cameras any more. I told her she should start putting them out. There were two Canon compacts and a Vivitar Series 1 Compact as well as a Vivitar zoom for the OM10 in the bag too. The zoom had fungus on though, I turned it down when she offered it to me free. Maybe I could've cleaned it, maybe not. She did give me five expired films though, 2 Kodak Gold 36 200, 2 Klick 24 200 and 1 Fuji Superia 24 100.

Interesting to hear that they don't put the cameras out for sale now. Whenever my girlfriend and I go into town I visit just about every charity shop we walk past (hey, it's only fair. I get dragged into every clothes shop) to see if there are any cameras in there. So far in my town I've never seen any cameras for sale!

It also depends on where in town you are. One charity shop local to me in work regularly puts out a sign advertising when new camera stock is in! Great for them, but a pity for me as I got some good stuff from them before!

thats interesting - i had thought about going around the charity shops when i went into town but the one time i remembered i didn thave time. i thikn i gave my old compact & APS camera & films to a charity shop when i moved out about 9 years ago as i didnt have the room, unless they are hidden in a box somewhere. Maybe those Klick films were my old ones as i used to work there, we piled 'em high and sold em cheap!

cant imagine anyone would want an APS camera now.....

One of the charity shops I went in had an APS film that expired in 2010. I was in the same shop today and bought a Hansa Auto Zoom 75-200mm f4.5 Macro with an OM mount. A quick look on the internet doesn't return much in the way of results. Anyone had one of these? I paid £10.

Hansa? seems like someone thought of the name to fool people in the past that it was a German lens but made by someone in Japan or other countries...anyway you never know till you try it and if not sharp, might be useful for portraiture...a sorta diffuser.

really? i thought everyone hated APS cameras! My parents bought me one as i think they were fed up with my paranoia that i did not load my 35mm correctly ( "i hope it loaded, do you think it loaded?" right up until getting prints back!) but the quality of print was a bit poo.

maybe you have my one that i gave to charity :p think my dad still has his, we put all our films onto disc recently

I've seen the name Hansa used on photographic accessories such as teleconverters and extension tubes. It was made in Japan, though it does only have 6 aperture blades. I finished the roll in my OM10 to test it. I'll see how they turned out when I get to Asda next.

I bought a Canon Ixus to take to Australia as it seemed to be the perfect size for a travel camera. Then a couple of days before I left, I saw a T90 in the window of a small camera shop in Brighton and bought it immediately as I'd always wanted one.

I still have the T90, the Ixus sold for about £15 on ebay with a few rolls of film some years ago. :)

A T90 would be nice, I don't have a T series Canon. I have 13 Canons at the moment so it would even them up too. Not that I'm superstitious or anything.

I've toyed with the idea of selling it a few times as it doesn't get the use it deserves but every time I pick it up I end up buying something else for it instead, most recently a macro ring flash. It's a keeper, I have too many accessories and lenses for it not to be :D

One of my favourites is the T70 and usually take a couple on holiday, it has 3 important advantages over other cameras:-
1. It's ugly so no one will bother to steal it.
2. If you drop it and break it, why care you can pick another body up for about £12
3. safety shift, so handy if you forget to change the shutter speed for light conditions. e.g. you have set the shutter speed for noon and it's getting dark and you haven't set the shutter for a slower speed.

I managed to get a T90 at the Carboot, its fitted with a Tamron Adaptall two lens, the shutter fires but then displays a fault, its only going to be an ornament in our daughters film camera collection so not too bad

If the shutter fires that's encouraging..just keep firing the shutter with the lens off to see if that makes a difference, and play with all the features and it might clear.

Two things commonly go wrong with the T90 and give the EEE fault - the shutter mechanism gets dirty or there's a small rubber washer which perishes and has to be replaced. Both are caused by lack of use. Press the battery check button inside the door on the handgrip and see if it clears the fault and the shutter fires again. Google "EEE syndrome" for many, many more suggestions :D

Personally I'd ask someone like Miles Whitehead for an opinion; they can usually be repaired and it's worth doing because they're a brilliant camera (I may be biased).

Thanks
The problem I have is its for our daughter, she has a small collection of film SLR cameras in her room as she likes them, she is all digital so wont use them.
So its not worth spending anything on as it wont get used, but it would be nice to have it as a working one. I will have a mess about and see if I can coax it back to life, thanks for your tips

35mm film sourced from Poundland - stock in both stores in the town - thanks for the tip

If anyone is interested and nearby, the QEF charity shop in East Horsley, Surrey have a number of cameras and lenses at good prices at the moment. Olympus OM10 with 50mm prime for £20, same price for an OM20 and lots of others. I've already got too many cameras and not enough cash!

Ooh, I've got one just like that... mine was £4.99 though. :)

Someone I know on a Facebook photography page was bragging about getting a Vivitar 28-200mm with a Nikon mount from a car boot yesterday for £5.

I have been trying to get it from him... I even offered him £6!!

Steve.

Still fun to go to boot sales as to some people film gear is junk, I think I've told this story before.....well at one boot sale I saw an old Zenit with case and the lenses were Helios 44-2 (good lens) and a 135mm Prinz galaxy (this turned out to be a good lens)...anyway the seller said "come on the lot for £1" , well I thought I'd give someone else a chance to buy it, and after about 45mins decided to go around again in case I missed something, and it still hadn't sold...well I bought it and everything worked but the Zenit (although working) was erm even junk to me and threw it in the bin.

I picked up a Konica C35 AF at the weekend, carboot, £4. I quickly rattled off a roll of agfa APX and processed it on Monday, there were a few under exposed frames but the good ones were pin sharp. :)
