Tamron 24-70 f2.8 on DX

Personally I wouldn't bother but ask yourself whether the 17-55 focal range suits you. If yes then keep it, if no then why?

What do you shoot generally?

The 24-70 will be useless when you want to go out with just one lens - the 17-55 is the DX equivalent of the 24-70 for a reason.

Personal preferences will make you decide.

When I had my D7000, I didn't like or need the wider lens like the Sigma 17-50mm I had, so I sold and bought the Tamron 28-75mm which basically lived on the camera. You can still get these new and they are excellent performers on DX cameras and will cost probably half of the newer VC model.

You are covered with your landscapes with your 11-20mm and the 24-70mm will cover your other uses apart from wildlife, where you usually need longer lenses depending on subjects you cover.

Go for it get the 24-70 it's a cracking bit of glass, as for those that say it's useless when you go out with one lens..... Erm no you're wrong as everyone shoots a different style. I often go out with just my 50mm 1.8 I like the range and it suits my style. No it doesn't suit everyone but it does me. And yes I am buying either a 24-70 or a 24-105 for my crop sensor camera, why? Because I can and 24mm it's wide enough for my style of shooting. I have a GoPro if I want crazy wide images. There are no rules. Brake the mould. Good luck

I personally would stick with the Nikon 17-55 f2.8. You will miss the wide side from time to time ........ I shoot the 24-70 on my D700 most of the time and the 17-55 on your DX body will be pretty much the same focal as my setup .....

Also the 17-55 f2.8 is a cracking lens.

I agree with other comments, stick with the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8, its a cracking lens and works out to 24-70mm equivalent. :)

Which end of the 17-55 do you spend most of your time? And if you are unsure which lens you want, make sure you buy second hand so you can sell on easily without much loss.

Saying 24-70 is useless as a single lens... Rubbish... It's a great focal length on crop, it is all down to how you shoot/how you work with the length. I used a 24-70 on my crop canon for over a year, having nothing wider. I shot two music festivals and other events and it was great!

Best thing to do is try shooting you 17-55 at the 24ish length and see what you think, then at the longest end and think you will be able to be shooting at a good bit more than that.

The Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 VC is a great lens for FX, but it's range is not suited for DX unless you very infrequently shoot wide. 17-55 is generally the most useful walkabout lens range for DX.

I own the Tamron on Canon FF and a Canon 17-55 on crop. I prefer the Tamron but that probably has as much to do with the bodies used (6D vs 7D) as the lenses themselves. On a 1.6 crop I find the range of the Tamron wanting. I have not shot Nikon for 10 years, but believe my comments are relevant across camps.

I am currently dithering over buying the 17-55. I already have the 16-85 on my D7100 and I am wondering whether the improvement is 'worth a grand'? I get the 17-55 build quality and the f2.8 but do the relatively aged optics stand up well on the modern D7100 sensor?

Reports of some focussing issues and a weak resolution spot around 50mm have delayed me so far. Researching can be confusing as I find myself hunting for negative reports and if you look hard enough you will find negative comments about most lenses. Any comments/thoughts would be welcome. :)

Well I bit the bullet, ordered one from Amazon yesterday, (best price of £950), if I did not like it then I could send it back hassle-free which is a valuable option.

The lens arrived 30 minutes ago, I have taken half a dozen shots at different settings and had a quick look at the pics on photoshop and I cannot fault it so far. The crispness and resolution certainly betters my 16-85 by some margin (Had it not then it would have gone back pretty smartly). Yes, it is heavy but what a lens!!! Expensive, yes but the quality is there in the build and the glass, it is a definite keeper and I am really looking forward to using it! :)
