I've bought some grey imports in the past from GoPros to L series lenses. They're rife on Ebay also and without the import fees because they're being shipped from the UK - obviously already imported in bulk. IMO there's nothing wrong with grey imports except for the fact that if it comes from the other side of the world and it's faulty then you have to pick up the tab on returning it or in some cases get a repair locally and send the bill to the company but only if it's a warranty fix (DigitalRev). It only wouldn't be ok if the company is trying to defraud the government etc by saying it's a £10 hairdryer in it to avoid taxes when instead it's a £10k lens; but that's on them not you.
If you can get a company in the UK that'll provide warranty then I don't see the issue as a buyer as it can be returned back to them in the UK for a small delivery fee only. SLRHut also pick up the tab on VAT and import costs to people in the UK (in their 'about' section).
