Nice. How far away would you say you were in this shot, and the first pic you posted on the last page? Are they cropped at all?

This shot was 6 meters as just measured it LOL and was with the 1DX and is a slight crop,would say thats about 80% of the original image.
Other shot was i guess about 5 meters with the 7D MKII with no crop but resized in Lightroom to 4000px longest edge at 300ppi.

Didnt make it to the bikes so more stuff with fur and feathers.
Was easy to carry around for a few hours on a Black Rapid but did find it hunted a bit under darker tree canopies even at 400mm but not by a massive amount.

Have set C1 and C2 both up as Dynamic IS and C1 with A/F bias towards speed and C2 with A/F bias towards focus.
Been out again today for a play but had a problem with heat haze at 960mm and then had a bit of a grab shot as when i changed over bodies to the 1DX the sparrowhawk just appeared in the field next to me and i just switched it on and grabbed some shots!
Think this lens may take a little bit of tweaking and a very slight learning curve to get the best out of it but value for money wise its a cracker.

I got mine from eBay for about £750, thought it was worth the little extra over the tamron

Simon,
The D700 is an excellent performer, that's why I treat it like an heirloom. From every review I've read, there's no reason why the Contemporary won't work fine with the D700 full frame. The only thing is, there may be some softness in the corners , but with some cropping, no one will ever notice it.
I will not be taking out my D700 from storage. But to justify the potential of the Contemporary, a thorough micro adjustment is in order for each camera it mounts on, yes an usb dock is a must.
Right now I'm in the mist of doing a micro adjustment calbration of my Contemporary lens and D3300 camera, this will be my 5th time doing this. I find each time I recalibrate, I learn something new and learn to do it better.
So far with my limited experience using the Sigma TC-1401 (1.4x tele converter), the results are not impressive, and I do not recommend it.

Here is a couple more taken with a 1.4x converter which makes it a 210-840mm lens. Both of these are shot at the full 840mm and cropped heavily. Nothing special but for such a slow lens (f9 with a converter) it takes it very well IMO.
Great images Roy, my images a are bit soft but its my weak upper body strength. I am going to have to use a monopod at all times.

@ Glen (Gadget) .... you've got the the 150-600 ??? Interesting to have your opinion on it, I've seen some very favourable reviews but wondered how it would cope with motorsport and especially bikes. Did you put it through it's paces? How does it compare to the 400 5.6 prime? AF speed good? 1DX should help etc. Appreciate your thoughts.

Hi buddy and yes i have got one now.
Still not been out with it trackside yet in all honesty but will give you an update as soon as i do my friend as missed Snetterton as my Dad passed away the other week.
Initial thoughts are that its still not as sharp as my 400mm f5.6 and A/F athough quick still lags behind aswell unless you use custom settings via the dock and limit minimum focus distance,although the speed difference is minimal it may show up with bikes as sometimes the 400 f5.6 is also slow compared to a 300 f2.8 or 400 f2.8 as you know.
Great thing in favour of it for motorsport are weight and range of focal lengths but for serious trackside use i would more than likely get the Sport for the improved weather sealing.
Wanted one more for family outings with my two little boys than weekend work as am after investing some of my inheritance into a newer 400 f2.8 to remember my Dad when shooting.

Yes, it was with a Canon 1.4x tc John - for some reason a Canon converter seem to work better than the sigma ones which is very strange.Roy,

No micro adjust, mine seems to be spot on out the box. Very happy with the IQ and sharpness, its surpassed my expectations. AF speed is also great.
I have set the OS setting to dynamic using the dock. It definitely makes a huge difference to the way that the OS kicks in and locks.

@ Dougie & Rixy.. Thanks you both! ..I've been experimenting micro adjusting the focus of the Contemporary on my D3300 camera. When I set the D3300 as 24mp (large image setting), the images are soft and blurry, like in portrait "glamour" shots. I find that if I set the camera to medium image setting (13mp), the images are nice and sharp. But I feel there still may be potential use of the micro adjusting the focus to tweak the lens further, will need more people experimenting with this. Everyone, I think I figured out how to use the Sigma TC-1401 (1.4x tc) with my Contemporary. Remember on my previous post, I found out the Contemporary works best when I set my D3300 from using image size "L" (large 24mp) down to size "M" (medium 13.5mp). Now I found out if I set my D3300 image size to "S" (small 6mp), then the TC-1401 will work fine with the Contemporary on my camera.
I took a test picture using Contemporary lens at 500mm + TC-1401 (1.4x) = 700mm + DX (1.5x crop factor) = 1,050mm FOV. The image below is cropped at 50% width, then reduced down to 1800x1200 size, with basic post processings.
