Hi all.
I'm off to La Palma for the first week of September and I am after some help for a few places to visit for taking landscape/nightsky shots. I will be taking a Rokinon 14mm AE f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC Aspherical Lens which I have just bought my nikon D610 and if possible a sigma 10-20mm and a Nikon 50mm, should I leave the 24-70 at home?
I would like to visit the Observatories but are you allowed near the site at night? I'm thinking the car headlamps may have an effect the telescopes in some way. Also I have seen a lighthouse in quite a few shots with the Milky way as a backdrop but not sure where the lighthouse is.
I have done no night time shots as yet but I have a few weeks to practise. Anywhere else I should go to? I will be hiring a car so should have no trouble in getting around.

We were on La Palma in February 7 years ago, so I might not have the up to date rules on visiting the Roque de los Muchachos Astrophysics Observatories. When we visited, there was a sign on the entrance road telling you not to have your headlights on during nightfall, but no sign telling you to keep out! We visited twice, once through the day and once for the sunset which was an amazing experience, so I highly recommend it. But I understand the weather changes very quickly up there at 2426 metres above sea level, so it's worth checking before you go.
Not sure of the lighthouse. There is one we saw (red and white striped), at the very southern tip of the island which looks over some salt pan works.
Other places we enjoyed were:-
The Volcán San Antonio and Volcán Teneguía both in the South of the island are worth visiting, these are not far from the above lighthouse..
Puerto Tazacorte a nice resort on the West, a small town with some interesting architecture.
Caldera de Taburiente National Park has some amazing walks through forests, mountains etc.....but you need a good map for these.

It's a lovely, unspoilt by tourism, island which hopefully we will return to one day.

I'm sure you will enjoy La Palma

might answer some of your questions regarding access and what happens - the official site website is less useful but it is at

Generally, once it is properly dark headlights are a definite no-no (sidelights or hazards are the normal rules for professional observatories), and even if you don't see any security, visitors are discouraged. The telescopes are seriously effected by any stray light, and the MAGIC telescope, if operating, can be effected more than most since it is out in the open, and has no shielding (it looks for Cerenkov radiation from showers of cosmic rays hitting the upper atmosphere, and generally only runs when there is no moon). Also hope you don't get car sick since the road is twisty!

Thank you for the Information and advice. I will enjoy the drive up and down but not sure about the Mrs, We did drove up the Moki dugway a few years ago and I've never seen anyone grip the door handle and seat so tightly in my life. I think I'll forget to tell her about the road until she mentions it when we are half way to the top.
