Canon EOS M Series Cameras

It's a fair cop! Tripod and a two-second delayed shutter. I elected to have the non-IS macro lens as I read that for macro, IS is not really good enough to get sharp shots with the required small apertures. Doesn't hurt that it's nearly half the price too!

Fab little camera

Not sure if I should upgrade to the M3 only thing that stops me is no viewfinder

I really like the optional EVF. It's well made, works very well, and I like the fact you can angle it. It makes the M3 "feel" more like a dSLR and is comfortable to use. Because it's quite solid, you can push it against your face for extra stability (not sure if that's possible with a built in one).

The only negative aspect is that you can't use external flash whilst using it. I would rather they added master controls to the built in flash rather than add an in built EVF to be honest.

Oh.. and the additional cost is another negative, but looks like you can pick them up for just over £100 now (I got mine in a bundle).

Ok the thanks for that how do you find the auto focus

Also does anyone know if you can use back button focus

Can imagine that being a bit of a handful to hold steady, or were you using a tripod???

The 100 macro isn't too bad on the M, I use mine on it a lot (more often than on a DSLR). I find that using the screen to frame means that I can shoot at odd angles and get into some places that I cannot shoot with the DSLR and macro. I do tend to use a flash with mine to make it easier to shoot handheld, the only downside is the relatively slow focus so for fast moving insects I swap over to the 7D. My recent moths on Flickr have mainly been shot with the M, however I am getting more and more tempted to get my hands on an M3.

I've had the M3 for 3 months now, with the EVF attachment, but never found the need to use it.
The autofocus is much quicker on the M3. Very pleased with it and the old M is sat on the shelf now.

The only EF-M lens I like is the EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM, that's a great little lens. The 11-22 is quite useful but quite slow...

I use a cheap 3rd party EF - EF-M adapter with mostly EF prime lenses and very happy with that...

I still have the old EOS M as well, I pretty much keep the 18-55 EF-M lens on that permanently as a "I need to grab a camera quickly because my son is doing something interesting" camera at home.

Had no issues with the 11-22mm great little lens, so is the 18-55mm and 22mm. Even adapting to the speed of the focus on the EOS M MKI and works well with the EF adapter and my 70-200mm f2.8

I also kept my old M.

I'm going out for a day shooting tomorrow on the Thames, taking the EOS M3 with the 11-22 again just to give that lens another chance.

I really liked the EOS M, especially after the firmware update that doubled the autofocus speed.

I must say I'm struggling to understand why you don't get on with the 11-22mm. I find it a fab little lens, and usually my lens of choice when out and about. Under what conditions do you find it slow? If you prefer something a bit quicker I know Samyang do a nice 12mm prime in M mount. No AF though..

I mean slow as in f/5.6 at 22mm compared to f/2.0 for the prime.

Granted for wide angles a lot of the time you'll want to shoot f/5.6 or higher. I last used it at a wedding where I was using an EOS 5D Mark III with 24-70 as the primary camera, and I found the 11-22 shots... boring. Hopefully tomorrow will be a more appropriate venue to try it out.

Gotcha. Yeah I'm usually using it at the 11 end, around F8 and going for architectural/landscape shots. Plenty of urban landscape opportunities around London I should imagine ;) Looking forward to seeing what you come back with!

Fortunately I have the Canon 10-22 which I use with my M mk1 on the EF adaptor. Better Max aperture but much heavier even without the mount. I would only consider the 11-22 EF-M if I was selling off my EF and EF-S kit and wanted an EF-M exclusive outfit. ....and there lies the problem with the 11-22 EF-M its not compatible with anything else in the Canon range (bar the M3 obviously) and unless you shoot the majority of your images at wide angle its a tough one to justify (for me anyway) when I can just use an existing lens from my DSLRs with the adaptor.
The 18-55 is different because it comes with the camera anyway so no need for a cost justification. The 22mm is a cracking little lightweight prime which makes the camera into its most pocketable adaptation so it has a purpose as well. For all other focal lengths (i.e. higher) I am happy using what I already own via the adaptor.
Each will have their own preference i'm sure.

Well my EOS-M has just become even more useful with the addition of this > http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LX4TH...m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0FG54DTSC20P2WA5J1HP

Took it with me on a recent Red Sea trip and was really impressed with both the camera and housing. Even down at 40m everything worked a treat and no leaks. Was a little bouyant but was just using the housing. Have since attached a handle, arm and strobe and expect it to be slightly negative.

Can't think of a better underwater camera package for £320!

Has anyone bought the M3 after owning an M2 ? If so how much faster is the focusing ? I bought an M2 on a whim but I was pleasantly surprised how much snappier the focus was compared to the original M.

Oh that's very cool, thanks for sharing. Was eyeing up a similar housing for the M but wasn't sure how good they would be, then started worrying about the lighting. Really pleased you've managed to use it to great effect!

Funnily enough I've just been working on a new article "ten things to do with your EOS M" and I read your Amazon review as I am adding "use it underwater!" as one of the ten items.

Would it be possible at all for me to use one of your pics (scaled down 720px wide, and with full credits) to help illustrate this? I'll be using manufacturer's photo of the housing too. For the blog listed in my profile!

That would make it much easier for people to understand the quality they can expect.

Thanks!

No problems at all, and thanks for asking!

I'm considering selling my M kit as I really don't like not having a viewfinder. Putting the camera up to your face helps to stabilize it as well as composing. Holding it up about a foot in front of your face flapping about just doesn't do it for me (too old school, I know!) Having said that I love everything else about the camera, very compact and high spec. Will probably go for the M3 with an electronic viewfinder.

Just used the Eco on the M3 & makes big savings on battery usage.

Does anyone know if I can turn off the menu button & use the fn button instead as I have a habit of keep catching it & turning menu on.

I'm not sure but it doesn't sound to me like something that would be possible.

I always have a problem with switching of flash when I don't want to :(

Anyone got the Samyang 8mm F2.8 or 12mm F2.0 (or both)? Just looking at these as a wide option for astrophotography and wondered if anyone had any thoughts.

I can't decide which one to go for, the 8mm would require more post-production but might be fun to have a fish eye. I have the 11-22, so the 12mm doesn't offer anything other than lower light capabilities, but that's needed for astro work. At the moment i would use the 22mm F2, but it would be nice to be able to go wider than this...
