Sigma 150-600mm contemporary

Roy I can help you here - the outdoorphotography supplies version has a see through window (in fact they both do).
Where I believe the sock wins over the velcro wrap around version is that it moves with the zoom so you're not restricted to full zoom or no cover (which you are with the velcro wrap) and imo it's a bid advantage. It's elasticated and stretches well beyong the zoom range so it doesn't drift and it also shrinks easily when the zoom is retracted.
I hope this all makes sense and helps you.
Thanks Chris, yes I know how the zoom sleeve works and I will get one anyway. I see that both companies offer the sleeve as a optional extra so I guess that means that the zoom portion of the lens must still be protected with ordinary neoprene when in the 600mm position and was just wondering if the outdoor photography gear one was detachable like the wildlife watching one?. The reason I ask is because I rarely use the lens at anything less than 600mm so most of the time I would not bother with the zoom sleeve if the zoom portion is protected anyway.

I'm fairly certain that neither companies kit includes anythi g for the exposed zoom section Roy, they cover the main lens sections when the zoom is closed and that's all. I think if you have yours at 600 most of the time, the velcro fastening one from WWS is probably the better option as it comes off a lot easier than having to pull the sock back over the fixed part of the lens.
I guess it's down to personal preference as the neoprene quality is pretty much the same for both.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again Chris. I was under the impression that Wildlife watching supplied a piece with velcro on for the fully zoomed portion as part of the standard kit but maybe I am wrong. Think it best if I give them a shout to find out for sure.

You may be correct there Roy, I really can't remember for sure. I do seem to recall I may have had one sent when I got a cover for my 400 f5.6 lens now though which was a bit of a surprise so I think you are correct. As you say, best to check and make sure.
I hope you get the one that suits you best.

Yes Chris the covers for 400/5.6 defo had a Velcro piece to cover the part that the retractable hood sits on when the hood was up. Checked the wildlife watching covers again and it does contain a Velcro piece for the zoom portion of the 150-600.

Thank you for clearing that up! That sounds like to best one for you then Roy.
I've had quite a few covers from them and I believe I've always been sent a pair of 1.4x & 2x extender covers f.o.c with all the covers I've had from WWS. Good company to deal with, always pretty fast dispatch as well.

Hi Roy. Outdoor photography supplies do include the velcro that covers the extended part when used at 500mm for the 200-500 so I am sure they can include one for the 150-600 to be used at 600mm if I understand correctly and this is what you need.

Thanks for that Michael, as a couple of folk on here who has owned the 'Outdoor photography supplies' one for the lens did not think that it did include the velcro section I have now ordered a set from 'wildlife watching'.

Well that picture answers my astro question. Nice shot, handheld, what would it be like on a tripod?

Just ordered my lens plus dock. I thought I had a good deal as Sigma had a Black Friday weekend offer with free filter on top of the current cash back deal. The store gave me further cashback plus filter and sd card, which is always useful. So no complaints. Lens arrives tomorrow.

Ordered from Park Cameras price eas £749.00. Paid a little more than a grey purchase as I wanted the proper warranty. The offer has just closed, I think.

My lens arrived today, early this morning, and I am now waiting for the westher to improve. Does anyone actually attach the lens strap that comes in the box or am I missing something.

Can anyone recommend cudtom settings?

A couple of bird shots from the weekend

First is a little Wren, taken at 600, wide open, ISO1600, probably a 60-70% crop, a little soft and had to apply a decent amount of NR using Lightroom

Secondly, a Robin, 290mm, stopped down to f8, ISO1600 again, this time i pretty much filled the frame (slight crop for composition), but this time hardly any NR required as there are hardly any signs of noise

Is anyone using a Manfrotto 203 Bug, backpack? I have been looking round and have come down to a choice ofe Ither the Lowepro flipside 400 or the Manfrotto. The waist straps look bulky on the Lowepro for my liking but does have a goid write up and I know, from this thread, several use it.

Hi, I have the Lowepro and the waist straps are thick but it stops them flapping about when not in use which is nice and also means that when you use them support the weight of the bag when accessing the storage area they are strong enough and comfy. Hope that helps.

Managed an hour at a local hide today with this lens, still need to brush up on my shooting technique as a lot of my shots are soft and noisy. Happy with this one though..

Well I splashed the cash today and brought one. Can't wait to test it out when I get back home

Didn't get back till late. The skies are clearing looks like it will have to be some moon shots tonight then to test it on the d750

Is anyone using a Tamrac Anvil 15 slim as their gadget bag? I do not want a bag the loads from the rear and this looks ok.

I'm in a position to be able to add this lens to my collection now. Will be for use on a D750 and mainly aimed towards motorsport. Is anyone using this combo for this purpose? How does this lens compare to the S version?

Thanks.

I'll be able to let you know in Feb. As this was the reason I got this combo and for wildlife.
Unless the local aero display team practice over the next couple of weeks.

Got this today as it is in the sale. Unboxed and looking good. Just hope the weather clears so i can play with it.

Got it from Castle Cameras, Bournemouth.

Since I got the S version, my D7200 hasn't seen the light of day and neither has my 1.4x extender. On the D750, it's a dream to use... Even at very high ISO levels. :)

I have a sneaky feeling you'd be happy with either model though. :)

It's dark, wet and not good outside, so I had to take a test shot of a tea towel in the kitchen, just to give it a go, I know, how sad is that?

Well I've had a torrid time with the pirchase of the lens. TNT have made a right balls up with the delivery but it should be here tomorrow providing they actually delivery it rather than liew and say there was no one in.

Also ordered the dock from Amazon. What have people been doing with it? Setting one custom mode for speed and one for accuracy? Also read something about Dynamic OS too. Is this the favoured setting? I'm used to VC and OS freezing the image in the viewfinder and i believe this setting will do that?

Are the customisation settings the same as the Sport model?

And finally, what would the Sport model offer me that the Contemporary won't?

Thankya!

Waiting to see how you get on with the custom settings on the docking station. When you eventually get out with it.

Haha, yes, me too. Sunday is looking promising atm.

One thing i have noticed even since changing the OS to dynamic is that it doesn't seem to kick in as much as it did with the 150-500. I don't think it's any less effective though.

I've only managed a couple of moon shots with mine over the Xmas break. Since then the weather and work has got in way.
I'm hoping the weather will break next week. As the blades ( local aerobatic display team) are meant to be having some practice sessions next week. I want to see what the lens on the d750 cam do. As I have enough shots to compare from when I had the 7100 and the 150-500.
