Nikkor 200-500?

Ha ha!

Actually, I tried both at 500mm - seemed silly to do it any other way. Tamron is fine at 500mm wide open as is the NIkkor - at 600mm the Tamron is definitely soft at f6.3 -BUT- you do get a bit more reach -AND- is quite good on a D7xxx :)

Now, whether I'll keep both is an interesting thing :help:
Now that's just greedy lol. I'm sure one will just become a dust collector, they're too similar to use both IMO ;)

Both??? Now that's greedy haha. Are you still in a position of whether to keep either then, or are you definitely keeping the Nikon?

Definitely keeping the Nikkor - can afford to keep both (at the moment) but not certain I will.... is my back/shoulder strong enough to carry both at my age? :)

The Tamron is only soft at the edges wide open so, on a DX, IQ is above reasonable --- really does show the weakness on FX though.

Well I cancelled my pre-order from Amazon in the end and went with another supplier.......which delivered in 3 days!

First impressions:
  • For me its huge, its a beast!
  • The weight is heavy, but I don't think it'll take long to get used to it.
  • IS is great!
  • Focus isn't super fast, but once at the correct distance its pretty snappy.
  • Image quality on the back of the camera looks to be pretty nice too, but might need to play with some settings to see if I can increase this, will also need to have a look on the computer too.
I'll report back more once I've had a chance to test more thoroughly.

Lovely capture of the Piebald,it would make me think the lens was worth it,was there any thing in the shooting situation which makes it more impressive than the other two.

A few from today. Piebald blackbird, song thrush and blackbird feeding on berry

Nice shots. How far away would you say that you were, and how much (if at all) have you cropped these images?

nice shots....looks like a keeper,I think that it is hit or miss with Tamron or Sigma, if you get a good one or not, a bit like a friday car or a monday car :)
I have had good sigma's and really crap ones, I had a very good 150-500 which i wish I never got rid of, I had the 50-500os which i couldn't wait to get rid of,
I had the 120-300 2.8 which wasn't much better..my 180mm sigma macro, I would never sell..and it looks like my 150-600 is a good keeper, but it does help with the docking-station....

  • The weight is heavy, but I don't think it'll take long to get used to it.
  • Now I've had a chance to shot with this lens, 6-7hours at -5 in the snow, its not that bad weight wise and its really well balanced, even fully extended.

  • IS is great!
  • IS in Normal mode is fantastic and really stable, but you do get a bit of movement/jump if you're coming in and out of using the IS, you do get used to this pretty quickly though.
  • Focus isn't super fast, but once at the correct distance its pretty snappy.
  • Focus still isnt supper fast when trying to jump near to far distances and it hunts a bit, but its really snappy once you're at the distance you wish to work at. Continuous Servo tracking works really well with this lens at all focal lengths.

  • Image quality on the back of the camera looks to be pretty nice too, but might need to play with some settings to see if I can increase this, will also need to have a look on the computer too.
  • On my D800 the lens was back-focusing just small amount, but once set up the detail that comes from this lens is great!
I'll hopefully post some shots this evening with 100% crops.

These are pretty much straight out of camera and I have uploaded the full image and a crop to show the quality. These little Great Tits are very fast when trying to photograph them and the focus on this is still just a tiny bit out, but you get the idea.

will the nikon 1.7 tc work with the nikon 200-500 ?

Stick it on a Dx body for an instant 1.5x telecon effect while keeping all the lens's benefits. ;)

I have just bought a 7200 body and to get even more length with 200-500 you can put camera to 1x3 crop,

You can get the same detail by cropping in on your PC later. (y) (+ easier to re-frame the image if wanted)

Sure, this is pretty much the same for most editing v's length of lens within reason,
I like the idea of being able to have the option in camera.:)

The real bonus in doing it in-camera is that it increases your burst rate/buffer as the files are somewhat smaller

so if i purchase the 200-500 nikon and put my 1.7 tc on it won't damage the lens or anything
as i thought it was only lens's that where f2.8 or faster that could take the tc's

You won't damage the lens using tc's (Nikons, don't know about others) - a 1.7 will most likely struggle to af in anything other than good light though given it will take the lens beyond f8 ... the reason why tc were "limited" to lenses with f2.8 previously was down to the af system only being able to work @ f5.6, later bodies can now af out to f8.

ETA: I should add in theory to the above as as I don't own this lens at the moment (but the bot about taking the tc and not damaging is correct).

I will be using on D810, but thinking what would it be like on a DX D7200? Anybody using this combo?

Nikon UK says the 1.4 tc can be used as it reduces the aperture down to f8. The 1.7tc and 2x likely fits but af would be hit and hit depending on light. I haven't tried this lens with a tc but I would guess af performance would be affected along with IQ.

Teleconverters are best with f2.8 and f4 lenses. I think the manufacturers have worked out people want to use Teleconverters with f5.6 lens. It also opens a bigger market for them too. It all depends or if you a maximum aperture of f8 is ok with you.

Can't see any reason why it wouldn't work well with a D7200 ... like adding a TC to a full frame body :)

Must admit the short use i have had with this lens, i am lovin it, i think with good light it will be hard to beat in its class,:)

are you using on a dx of f/f body also are you using any tc ? if so what one and how is IQ
cheers

Umm - this whole thread is 60% opinions and samples!
Yes but the last entry before today was over a month ago, which means, either everyone is so loving there new lens they have no time to post, or they have found problems but don't want to tell anyone.
