Glencoe meets Storm Jonas

I post these with some trepidation following some of the stunning Glencoe shots that have been exhibited here recently.

In the other forum I solicited input on a trip for January (https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/january-location-glencoe-or-derbyshire.606505/) and settled on Glencoe in January. As luck would have it my 4 day trip coincided with Storm Jonas a couple of seeks ago.

3 days of persistent rain and 1 day of decent weather. I had initially been worried about snow and ice, concerns about how much scuba gear would have been more appropriate.

No golden hours, but a few decent shots I hope.

Constructive C&C welcome on what I could have done better on the day.

Thanks

Alan

An opportunistic "sunset" shot, I'd been up on Rannoch moor hoping it would clear but it didn't. Driving back down and for a few brief minutes the clouds broke. When I got down to the B&B my hosts told me it had been really clear in the valley and did I see the spectacular sunset!!!!

Some nice reflections in the lochs. Scotland has some great landscapes. Glencoe and Rannoch Moor are two places I would like to visit one day. I thought I would ask do you mean Storm Gertude rather than Jonas as that was 28th/29th January.

Thanks Rob, I'm pretty sure it was storm Jonas, I was up there 25-28 Jan and recall it being talked about on the news, but there has been such a sequence coming through maybe I'm out of order! I'm also a bit slow posting!

I feel your pain Alan i was up there January 23rd for the week but came home on the thursday 28th as the forecast for Friday / Saturday was for high winds and rain
The only decent light i got was in the Glen on the Wednesday afternoon 27th which lasted all of two hours but was very welcome and i did manage a few shots

John, we must have passed each other on the road :), Wednesday 27th was when I took all these except the first and last.

Excellent set of a great location, certainly worth the trip.
To clear up the storm confusion, Jonas was the US named storm, not a UK & Eire named one. Our next one will be starting with the letter J and will be named Jake.

That makes sense, I gather it's the first year the UK has named storms. The list of names is quite funny, storm Steve is my favourite.

A great set of images Alan, looks like time well spent,

I think it's a rather good set.....showing that this place has drama and beauty even in the grim weather.
I do have to disagree with this from Steve:

They are all well composed but to me illustrate why light is good and wind and rain aren't for landscape photography.

We know that light is your preference Steve, and you record it beautifully.
But the landscape is there 24/7/52, in all weathers and all conditions, and each has different aspects and moods to offer.
There is no "good and bad" or "right and wrong", there are only different lights for different moods.
Just my opinion.

And all that is very fair.

I suppose I have the advantage of living relatively near by so I can shoot when I want to according to weather conditions that suit my ideal. If its overcast I simply won't head out. I don't like bad/dull weather and being out in it, nor do I like the sort if images it produces. However if I was visiting the place from a far I would want to leave with some images but would be planning my imminent return in conditions I deemed better.

All these are nice views, but I just love sun light and good weather. It makes everything seem uplifting and that uplifting feeling is something I always try to capture.

Thats said, the OP has made the most of what sadly wasn't to be.

Well I like these the poor weather has given some interest to these.

We all have locations and types of waether we prefer and I really like your work and wouldnt suggest you change but downbeat and opressive weather is good too.

Two and five stand out for me. Also like Noah 1 shot.

Thanks all for your positive comments. I admit I went hoping for crystal skies, frost and "great" light. I had reflection pools and dawn mountain top climbs all planned in. But it wasn't to be, it was something else instead. Part of what I enjoy about photography is working with the elements on the day to create something that gives an impression of what it was like to be there and the atmosphere in an aesthetic way. If that it a crystal morning with reflections, like some of your great work Steve, so be it, if it's a moody day that works for me too.

These aren't the shots I had anticipated for the trip, but I'm more than happy with a couple of these :)
