Further to the previous thread about me taking my pension this is how I spent some of the money.

Maserati 4200 just back from the paintshop after a complete respray

For those that don't know my 4200 wasn't bad but it had a number of imperfections, body damage and some rust

I was recommended a coachworks in Portsmouth so I took it down

This is the result, I'm blown away by the quality of the work which included the badly kerbed wheels

If you want paintwork doing it's well worth the trip to Portsmouth, Phill is a professional with a keen eye for detail, he only works one way, it's right or it doesn't get done.

He doesn't fill rust so the section round the rear lights was cut out as was the bottom of the rear arches, passenger door had damage and the aerial hole was a mess so that's gone completely

it was a 500 mile round trip for me and I'd do it again without hesitation, if anyone needs a car painting PM me for the details

excuse my rusty nuts :D

Looks like he's done a lovely job right enough. Now go get yourself some shiny nuts and tyre shine ;)

Ooh, very nice indeed and I bet it sounds wonderful as well :)

Certainly looks like they've done a great job

NNNNNoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Armourall tyre dressing, it's not shiny but returns the tyre walls to black instead of grey. Shiny tyre walls just looks so very, very wrong.

'twas a general term for the product ;)

I agree, too shiny isn't good and many fade far too quickly. I've been using Autoglym but the spray trigger / liquid application is not ideal and can mark the wheels too.

I'll be looking at a proper dressing or gel next.

Arourall just sprays on as a foam and doesn't mark the alloys. Works well on mud flaps and any black trim, even the under bonnet covers.

You know they have £50 off 4 Bridgestones from Monday ???

I did thanks, I bought 4 pilot sport 4s when the last £50 offer was on a few weeks ago , they stuck them out the back for when I was ready

I'd be very happy with that! Was that a same colour finish? Dare I ask how much?

I like your thinking 61........
Wonder if my pension pot will stretch to a nice Cerbera or possibly another Tuscan so I can grow old disgracefully (and loudly)

Lovely motor car Sir - well done.

Love the look. Would prefer a custom colour if I were going to re spray a car like that.

I love the gloss look. Really want to try swissvax pneu but can never seem to justify the cost.

Gorgeouser than a gorgeous thing. Go give your nuts a rub

Costco change tyres!?

Costco change tyres!?

Yes, supply and fit - generally Michelin Tyres, but so sometimes also stock Continental and recently Bridgestone.

One thing I like - as Darren did - is if they have an offer on a set of 4 tyres, they'll fit what you need fitting there and then (if any) and you return at later stage, with your tyres and they'll fit them for you - no extra charge :)

They're generally well priced as well...

Wow I had no idea!

I usually buy michelin so that's good for me.

The offer price and fitting them later iscscgood idea too. What sort of savings are there to be had there?

Really depends on size of tyres - but sometimes they're the cheapest I can find (inc internet options), sometimes they're similar price to getting them from the internet tyre supplies...

They can also do a discount on a pair of tyres or set of 4 - currently £50 off a set of 4 Bridgestone tyres.

Don't forget though, there is a membership cost annually for Costco...

Very nice. Out of curiosity have you told your insurers and did it make any difference? To me it shouldnt as its not affecting performance or anything. But no doubt, knowing insurers...

Funny that, a member on AV forums said it was one of the ugliest cars he'd ever seen and it looked like a Toyota

No accounting for taste

No there's no need , its all still original and valued at well over what paid for it even without the new paint

I've bought my tyres from Costco for at least 15 years, the reason I don't supply anything for somebody else to fit is a friend thought he'd save a few quid by buying a boiler and getting it fitted , when it packed up the boiler manufacturer blamed the fitter and the fitter said the boiler was faulty

It's not worth the hassle plus costco customer service is easily the best in the business

He's asked me not to say what I paid , he runs a bodyshop that mostly does insurance repairs but wants to get into painting exotics so wanted one that needed work for some before and after shots

It was much more work than he thought , we agreed the nose would stay on because he found out it was 5+ hours to get it off but when he sent me pictures of it just painted it was off

I rang to ask why and he said he couldn't paint it on because even though it wouldn't show in a picture it wasn't right

He really is a perfectionist
All I can say in fairness to him is he said if I went again it'd be £3500 which when you consider what insurance companies get charged to fix a wings is still cheap

The lacquer he uses is £400 for 5itres

That's one lovely looking car and in beautiful condition, how old is it?

Enjoy your lifetime savings and many miles of motoring too.

It's 14 years old and goes like stink , its got a version of the same engine that's in the Ferrari 360

I had a holiday driving round europe once in a Honda S2000, amazing experience, you should try it in that beautiful Maserati :)

Lovely motor car Sir - well done.

I did intend spending a lot more but now I'm glad I didn't, with exotics once you start spending a lot to keep the value up they need to have a main dealer or at least specialist service history

This has a good history but not with a maserati specialist for at least 5 years so it's crossed that line already which means I can happily take it to the guy I've used for over 10 years

They also use a lot of alfa parts so you can save money with the same part in an alfa box , sportsmaserati is a goldmine of money saving info

I can only imagine what that Mazzer would sound like on the Route de Napolean and on the stretch of motorway between Nice and Genova - lots and lots of tunnels.

If you're serious about a Cerbera, let me know. I'll happily help/chat. You're just a little bit far away to show you mine :D

Nice motor, need a tunnel to test her in!! as long as you can find a nice long one!

A nice car and no dustcaps, dearie me!

New tyres fitted the day after the pictures were taken , , new valves ,dust caps in place

Superb Darren, what's the going Brake Horse Power on that bad boy ??

A lot 385bhp I think, this one has the original gearbox software which changes gear a lot faster than the later cars , the gearbox ECU is quite sought after because the later cars don't give you that thump in the back when they change.

I had an Impreza WRX before this which was 235bhp , the 4200 will never match it for handling but the acelleration is brutal and addictive , overtaking has never been so easy , by the time the exhaust has woken them up you're too far away to see the fist waving, bloody hooligan

I thought about changing the colour but it was a lot more work(money)so on my wife's advice(threats) I decided keeping it the same colour was the best option (for staying married)

4200's are around 390 bhp, 330 ft/lbs torque, trouble is the are quite heavy as well around 1750kg when fuelled and on the road. Still good for a 5 second 0-60 so pretty rapid, and sounds like it when it's doing it :)

Nice job. And absolutely, that's the way to do it properly.

Over the road from my office in Maidenhead is a similar coachworks. They insist they will only do things 'properly' and they have pretty much cornered the market locally for classic cars. It's fascinating seeing a continual stream of Aston Martins, vintage Jaguars, Ferraris and such like going in and out of there.

A couple of years ago my wife celebrated a significant birthday and I got the body shop to 'sort out' her Mercedes SLK in a similar way to what you've had done to your Maserati. It looks as good as new now, and it didn't cost a fortune. Money very well spent.

Another Yeti driver - I love mine!!!

you need to change those rusty wheel nuts or get some plastic caps

I've bought some black stainless steel ones but the nuts need de rusting because they're too tight to fit on and a hammer which is my usual cure is a step too far

I'd love to get the TVR resprayed but can't quite justify it currently as I've been quoted 6-8k to do it properly. It's rosso pearl faded in places so needs a complete strip and respray

That's the way to go and also try to get a "soft" socket to ensure that you do not mark them
