D500

Well after looking on the Internet at many of the sample images posted by new owners (not this thread) I've decided I don't need the D500 :)

IMHO the D500 is not about just image quality which is close to the D7200.
It's about the FPS and, most importantly, the great AF. Also the tilt screen and AUTO AF adjustment is great. I micro-adjusted my 200-500 in seconds!

Using the 200-500 today felt much faster, AF wise, than with the D7200 and D750.

I've read quite a few people saying it's not all that and is a bit hit and miss (AF fine tune I mean).

Looks like Greys have plenty just seen their Facebook post with the pyramid of d500 boxes they build :)

May have to go round tomorrow and see, if so I'll have one by tomorrow afternoon! Bet they're all accounted for though.

Took mine out for a trial today. Overall very pleased

Battery life - 853 shots & 53% left : initial setup & a fair amount of chimping. Wifi, Blue tooth, touch screen all turned off. Used a 1 year old Nikon battery fully charged.
AF : My first impression is it's very good, faster than my d810 & traded D7200. Locked on very fast and seemed to track BIF's well.
FPS nice to be able to get higher than 5
Buffer = Used a fast SD card Sandisk Extreme PRO SDXC II Did not notice any problems or slow downs, but I did not try to fill the buffer either.

A few shots, lot of heat haze around over the reed beds and water. All processed with ACR and PS.

Can't wait for tomorrow :)

Just seen your exif, hats off guessing the glossy was taken with a 600 f4 and 2x tc?

You can have as many frames as you like and fantastic high ISO but if the camera can't focus they are of little relevance. The key to all these cameras now is how well they focus.

Let's hope greys have a d500 then 1 out of 2 ain't bad haha

Unfortunately they're all gone, so I'll transfer the money for the lens today and I'm happy for you to post it tomorrow, no rush ;) As you said, 1 out of 2...!

A friend had his out yesterday and said the AF was nice and fast and oerformed well and he loves the ISO button on top. After 20 shots ge had a mark on the sensor- hope its not a return of the oil issue, he will clean and investigate today.

Saw someone on DPR who said he found 3 marks on his...tried a rocket blower and didn't go..uh oh...

or a few months and save a few bob! :D

Like I said work are going to give me a bonus to cover it since I was robbed, so it doesn't matter how much it costs to me, they'll only give me whatever the receipt says (if I wait a few months and get it cheaper, they won't give me £1729 and let me keep the change!) :D

Good for you Chris ... put in a good word for me :D

Is your mate called Bob? in Cornwall cos i know a Bob and he said he had sensor marks on his exactly after 20 shots too!!!

A friend of mine just had his 500 delivered from Digitalrev no signs of oil yet but his non nikon batteries [ex pro i think] do not work they just show as empty.

Well I asked Gray's of Westminster on fb if the stock in their photo had all gone and was told yes but to leave my number to be notified when they next get stock. Got a call today that someone has cancelled and so they have a spare I can go and collect tomorrow :D

Shame you're not near me or you could have used mine for the trip! Nikon still have my lens for repairs (incompatibity with the d7200 which is no longer an issue!) so I can't use it anyway!

I've been waiting for Panamoz to get the D500 in stock to see if I can save some money, but they say they haven't been able to get any information from their suppliers. :( So I was surprised that Digitalrev have them in stock. They must have better/different suppliers. ;) Panamoz seemed to get the D750 in pretty quickly on release, and had a good discount. Nikon's supply/distribution shenanigans have messed a lot of people about.

I've been reading various accounts on the batteries running out very quickly for some people. Some have done a couple of recharge cycles and the batteries have lasted longer. Some still have problems. The thought is it is the internal battery that needs to be initially charged that may be the problem for some. Time will tell. Putting the camera in flight mode seems to help too.

I think it is a bit of a pain that Nikon has changed something in the camera so that it doesn't read many if not all of the current EN-EL15 copies, but not unprecedented by them, and understandable for the sales of their own batteries. Hopefully the copiers are working on getting around the problem, as I don't fancy paying Nikon prices if/when I get the D500. ;)

Allegedly some Nikon batteries don't work in some D500's

I only ever have one battery, the one that comes with the camera. In the 8 years I've been doing that, I've never had a problem so luckily the non Nikon battery problem doesn't affect me. I won't use snapbridge or WiFi so hope the short battery life issue won't affect me.

I have been getting over 1200 shots per charge, with more than normal chimping :). Wifi, Snapbridge, touchscreen all off. No XQD card only an SD one, not sure that would make difference.

I read somewhere that the non working Nikon batteries are the older EN-EL15's with a Li-ion10 marking, The ones marked with Li-ion20 I've tried all seem to work, the 1 Hahnel battery I have does not work, it just shows as empty.

This was/is common practice with some manufacturers ....... it will not take long for the Chinese to figure out what has happened and get around it - doesn't help of course if you have existing batteries that do not work

What SD are you using? I will use 14 bit raw but will never need 200 shots I'm sure.

How are you finding noise? I'm seeing shots on DPR at ISO 500 that look ridiculously noisy! The sort of noise I'd expect on my d7200 at ISO 2000 :/ If they're indicative of how the d500 performs at lower ISOs, I'm not sure I'm keeping it!

Mod edit Please don't use other peoples images for critic,

As I keep saying reach is just an illusion it is just a DX crop, which you get for free on the D750 and D810, buy the D810, it's the same price and now a true bargain

push the pixel density on these small sensors and you will get noise, the more you crop

That image is just sh1t, in many ways - it cannot be that bad!!!

The d810 has worse AF, lower fps and 6mp less. Plus I've seen people saying the d500 has about the same noise as the d810 (in d810 crop mode). I don't know if this guy is seen as a joke or if he's respected, and I haven't viewed the images on my PC, but on my phone they look close

If only I had my lens I could see for myself! As it stands I'm not sure I'll get it back before the time limit when I'm allowed to return the camera!
