Yes
without a car - my local landscape opportuniies are now very limited

so planning a summer trip - poss down to the Lakes
travelling by coach or train from Glasgow and staying at ONE only B&B - with pub dinners ..:)

before I see my local travel agent
any suggestions as to a 'base' town/village within the best landscape area
walking any distance is a problem....:(
if you know of a suitable B&B that would be great too

many thanks

PS

anybody with a small caravan for rent - ANY time during the summer

about a week - single chap -----------unfortunately...:(

Bo'ness is a fab place for Windermere. As you are coming down from Glasgow, Keswick may be better and accommodation is cheaper.

There are some very nice boutique hotels in Bowness and a pretty price but there is also a NT campsite on the edge of Windermere. Has glamping as well!

Ambleside of Windermere is also quite good.

Away from the typical tourist areas then you can get more of a bargain - staying in farms or youth hostels etc. Anywhere where you stay in fantastic scenery

I'd suggest Ambleside or Keswick as your best options.
Keswick allows you access to Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite with relative ease. It's one of the more covered areas photographically due to its proximity. You've got good mountain views in most directions, and Castlerigg Stone Circle and Tewet Tarn nearby as well as Ullswater not too far away.
Ambleside is in the heart of some great scenery. It's more of a pain to get to without a car I presume, but you've got a lot of landscape potential within easy reach. Grasmere, Rydal Water, the Langdales, Blea Tarn.
The A591 will have reopened by then, following the flood damage, so you should be able to transit between the two easily by bus, which will allow you more landscape options than you could cover in a week.
I'm afraid I am no help on the B&B though.

Finding b&b for a single guy anywhere in Lakes could be difficult. Most rooms are set for couples. And don't even think about staying for just one night; two nights is the universal minimum during the season (February-December!)
The rooms you get will be small - "cosy" in estate agents terms. You might not even get en-suite. Single rooms tend to be spare rooms that will just about take a bed and a chair.
Having said that I have stayed at these two places. Rooms are small but clean and food is good. Evening meals will be pub based.

OOPS, I forgot. You asked for the best area to stay. That's simple. Anywhere and everywhere is the best place. Just book in then worry about your intinerary afterwards.

Wherever you end up the Mountain Goat bus service is a good way of getting around - http://www.mountain-goat.co.uk/ They operate mini buses to some fairly remote places, up the mountain passes etc. so plenty of chance to get out-and-about without walking. There are also a variety of hostels which might be more flexible accommodation wise and if you are in Ambleside or Keswisk you can't spit without hitting a pub that does food.

looks like prices are higher than when i was 'on-the-road 30years ago........:(:

so prob looking for a B&B in a residence rather than a 'guest house/hotel'
dont want to be too rural tho as transport then becomes a stumbling block

time to dig out the old tent i took to Chamonix...?...
nah - too old for that now - I do like a warm bed at night

a possibility is still finding a 'coach tour' from here - usually organised for the 'blue rinse brigade' ........... and me

Hi John, how about keeping an eye on the forum meets? I'm sure if you can meet up then there would be room in a car.

Probably a bit late for the OP but I did a similar thing in 2015. Based myself in Windermere close to the railway station. Found a self-catering place on ownersdirect for just over £50 a night. Few mins walk to the station which is where the local busses leave from and where the mountain goat tour pickup is. Search for barn loft cottage windermere..

I did consider a tour but in the end just used buses so I could go at my own pace. A 7 day ticket was about £30 I think.

I managed to get to Conniston, Grasmere, Keswick, Buttermere & Ullswater using busses.

I stay on Keswick when the I'm up there. The west view guesthouse. The main bus station is a few hundred yards round the corner and the Lake is on their doorstep. Great landlady and lovely breakfasts.
