Can anyone please advise where the viewpoint is for the winding road that I think goes towards Edale?

Never having been to Mam Tor before, I've found the car park on Google Maps and can then see a pathway running up to the top. Not sure though where the viewpoint is for the winding road though.

So you park on the lay-by of the road you are referring to. Then you can either walk south along the road to get to the start of the path that ascends up to the summit for a view. Or, from the lay-by you can take the path that contours round the north of Mam Tor and I'm pretty sure there is a view from up there too.

Thanks again for all the help.

David, I didn't realise Mam Tor was that bad until I went past the car park yesterday. Not overflowing but not far off.

It's pretty much like going to Tesco's. It offers some lovely views from all around and the walk along the ridge to Losehill is a nice steady one. Having the really easy accessibility makes it very popular so getting a good spot can prove tough sometimes.

My advice would be to make your own shots. Look for something different and put your own spin on it. Obviously there's nothing wrong with taking the same shots as the ones you have seen before of course.

Also, keep an eye on the weather weather forecast. That is what will make the difference.

If you mean the Mam Nick road, you can see it and the car park here - https://biSPAM/1Vse4Ap
(is map reading the forgotten skill of TP? - Bing uses the OS maps which are far superior to the Google versions)

Curious fact, when the railway was built through Edale and the Hope Valley the tunnels were cut from both ends (and shafts from the middle). A railway steam loco was brought over Mam Nick and down the twisty road into Edale for the work from that side.

There is more to Edale and the Hope Valley than Mam Tor and Winnat's Pass.. there are lots of lesser known locations to be discovered.

btw, "winding road" could be either Mam Nick or Winnat's Pass. A link to an example of the location you mean might be useful..

As above, from Castleton head towards Mam Tor and up Winnats Pass past the Speedwell cavern car park. At the top of the pass, turn right, then the road takes a sharp left and you come to the car park on the right. If you park in the car park walk up the path at the back of the car park with Mam Tor up in front of you. There are lay-bys along that road if you can get in. Just past the car park turn sharp right and go up hill to where the road bends left and the style for the path up Mam Tor is on the bend. There are a couple of very small lay-bys around the bend, then the road starts snaking downhill, which is the snakey road to Edale that I think you refer to. As you walk up the path to the summit, just before you get to the top, turn around and that's the pic of the snakey Edale road, facing West so good at sunset. Carry on up and past the summit trig point and you see the great ridge, lose hill and win hill stretching out in front of you, sunrise is in this direction (I was there at 4am last week but the sunrise was a bit of a washout).

My favourite part of the country, I was up on Win Hill on Sunday :)
