Next camera for video!

Yes
So I am looking at upgrading the 5dmkii for video with a budget of up to £1k new or second hand.

Currently on my camera roster I have: canon 5dmkii, canon 760d, dji osmo and 2 GoPro hero 4 black.

I really want the 4K aspect to be able to crop and re master at full 1080p, the osmo is great as we all know but I need that quality in dslr or hybrid.

The GH4 is ticking a lot of boxes but so is the next mode up GH4r.

Anyone had use of these or recommend something else? Cine cams are tempting but a little out the budget.

How about selling the Zenmuse X3 and GoPro and adding to your budget so you can get the Zenmuse X5?

Personally I don't have the need to upgrade to the 5 as the 3 is more then adequate for the amount of work I do with it.

Obviously if I fell into a little money then I would get it.

Is the GH4r really 'next model up'? Never heard of it before, but appears to be basically the same camera. You can get 10-bit log footage out of the GH4 - which is a crazy amount of camera for the money.

As always, what gear is best suited for you, will depend almost entirely on what you want to do with it.

I shoot a big mixture of work as I work with an agency. Majority of work is outdoor hobbies but for instance last week I was shooting fireplaces in show rooms, with someone talking about the products.

Really the need is to get that extra bit of quality and potential downsize to 1080 to fall back on.

Well, seems to make sense to stay with Canon, assuming you have a bunch of lenses and random accessories that build up over time. The 5D4 due in a few weeks looks like it will be a serious step forward with video, it's not going to be anywhere near your budget though.

A GH4 would be great, and second hand would be well inside budget (I assume, dunno UK prices). But then you've got to buy lenses and whatever extras you need. Or you could get an active adaptor to stick your Canon lenses on - that's still a bit of extra cash, and some of them are a bit crap. We have a Metabones Speedbooster on a GH4, while it's a pretty genius piece of kit, for $600 or whatever it costs, the fit is balls. Lenses wobble around way too much.

It's a difficult one. Ideally yes stick with canon but to get that quality I need/want it's out of my budget.

I've seen some stunning footage from the gh4 and it would purely be for video so one or two max lenses will be needed.

But there really isn't much out there new or second hand really

GH4R doesn't offer anything worthwhile over the GH4 which is cheaper. I think the main differences are the GH4R has a LOG picture profile (which really needs an external recorder to work well) and no 30 minute time limit for clips. Mechanically they are identical.

I use a GH4 as my second camera for video jobs. It works great, highly recommended. There are other 4K capable cameras that are at least as good but have other limitations; Sony A6300, Panasonic GX8 Fuji XT2 etc. I think the main advantage of the GH4 is it is tried and tested and has no major foibles. Cheap(relatively) second hand as well.

I don't think there's a 'do it all' option at the moment, but a lot of people are embracing the medium and in a year or two there will be a perfect option.

Until then it's a matter of deciding which features you can live without.

If I knew what I knew now I think I'd have gone with the GH4 instead of the 70d, but now I've took the plunge it's not really that much of a difference to make me spend the money over again. I'll sit it out until the next big thing.
