Nice set there Ruth, I think the tight crop suits them well (y)

Thanks Jak.
The bit of leaf on the chimp's lip is bugging me now I look at it again

Very nice set brilliant expression on the second one

Thanks very much. :)
Yeah, he looks less than impressed doesn't he.

Lovely set - I really like the first and the expression you've caught in the second.

Great set of images Ruth. Well done

Thanks Fi.
That was the first time I caught chimps worth anything.

Is this Colchester? If so, how is the new enclosure coming along? We're going next weekend :)

Yes, Colchester.
The new enclosure looks like it will be great, but still rather a building site.
I loved the zoo though and will definitely go back before too long.

It is one of my favourites - we have annual passes even though it is a couple of hours away and we have several other zoo's closer. The annual pass gets us into tons of other places too though so is more than worth it.

If it were closer, I would too. Taking the Dartford crossing into account, I'd think it's a couple of hours from here too.
Howletts is my closest, and I used to have their annual pass.

I don't know how the zoos that participate in this scheme manage to benefit from it, especially as it is so easily exploited.

It's simple.
It actually costs the zoo no more if you visit one time or 10 times.
A person walking around a zoo actually costs them nothing, but chances are that person, each time they visit, will spend money on food, drink, souvenirs, and that's where their real money is made.
Not all zoos' season tickets include admission to other venues either, Colchester's seems particularly generous in that regard.
I'm sure extensive cost analysis has been carried out and deemed in their favour.

that - plus of course most people are fairly honest ... there'll always be the person who gives their card to their friend, bbut if that freind visits and likes it the chances are he'll go back and possibly get a membership himself - plus theres the people who get a zoo membership intending to go regularly then don't so the zoo is actually getting more out of them thabn they would just on a ticket

a few years ago i got a membership of marwell - but its just too far to justify going regularly, so i'd have been better off with just paying ticket price as i only really go there if theres a special reason, like snow leopard cubs or something else worth spending time doing..

great shots btw - i especially like the second one down

Thank you.
My membership cards have always included a picture, which makes them hard to pass on. :)

I'm guess the old , thumb over the photo while waving the card trick doesnt work any more

Have to be a big ol' thumb!

So many double entendres ... bad moose, down boy

tbh I doubt zoo staff look carefully at the photos , and Id card photos are notoriously bad anyway ( I look like a deviant on my staff id card)

The ones I have been to do, sometimes even pressing a key or two on theirs PCs as well! I guess, as a friend suggested, there are relatively few members that go around to several zoo in a single year.

coming back to the photos, the only crit i'd give is that on the fox its a shame you couldnt get a lower angle - i realise it might not have been possible, but the my dog angle isnt great with canids - this is why i like the fennec fox enclosure at cotswolds as you can get right down to their level (so long as you don't mind getting dirty)
