Hi, I found this site in my many searches and thought I would join and read and learn as much as I can.

I'm new to photography really, I worked with my Dad in his video business 25 years ago (probably more than that) when we used U-Matic, I remember the excitement when S-VHS came out and suddenly our cameras didn't leave us being unable to walk the day after a shoot!

Always loved taking pictures, just point and shoot cameras really, the best quality camera I've ever owned is the one always in my pocket - my iPhone 6. Sorry - sad I know and not really a camera to be proud of, but it takes a nice picture.

If you read my bio you will see that my life is a little restricted. I'm a full time carer to my two disabled boys - one is now adult - and my better half works full time. I have run business and a charity but my own illness helped me take the difficult decision to stop working and concentrate on my kids and my own health. I also have a little girl, she is my favourite photography subject, she loves a pose and I love to snap pics of her loving life.

I can't get a normal job, and working part time still has rules and routines. I've been mulling over a few business ideas but keep coming back to photography. I have always shrugged it off and thought no way could I do that, I don't have the skills. Recently though I've been thinking maybe I could do it. I don't want or need to get rich, I need something to get interested in, a challenge, that I can pick and choose when I do it, won't be too strenuous - my own disability can leave me in a lot of pain so I have to be careful - and I just wonder if I could make a bit of money towards it.

Summer of 2015 we took the life changing decision to move 200 miles from a busy urban environment to just outside a tiny village in the middle of North Devon. It was the best decision we ever made, so much beauty around us and life feels good for the first time in a long while. We have amazing fascinating places to explore, the fresh air, peace and quiet and an all round better life. We also have a huge garden to enjoy - most of my pics are in the garden, I need to expand my horizons a bit!

I can't spend too much at the moment as we are getting married early 2016, and yes I've booked the photographer - that was a challenge! I guess that helped me to realise I may well be able to have a career in photography. During my long search I stumbled across many that made me think 'I really could do this', others made me think 'I would love to be that good'.

Once the wedding is 'done' the spending will begin. I'm currently aiming for a Canon 6D but I hope by then the replacement is released, if not I will wait a little longer. I have looked at the Canon 5D but so much I read say there just isn't a huge difference. I do like the extra weatherproofing of the 5D and it does rain an awful lot down here, I want to be out taking pics, so maybe I need to keep considering.

I will be investing in the best lenses I can afford, flashes and accessories, bag, tripod, strap etc. I'm going to be asking a LOT of stupid questions but I promise to search first!

I'm looking forward to getting involved and learning all I can from the talented people on here.

Best wishes to you all

Marc

Hi Marc and a warm welcome to TP.
Hope you enjoy yourself here :)

Thanks And, I've spent so long reading stuff on the forums so far that I think I'm more confused than before I got here!

Things are slowly sinking in, I still don't know what I really want but no rush :)

Welcome from a fellow Devonian.

It's a sensible idea to take your time on which camera, I've just upgraded to a 6D and love it.

Congratulations as well.

Thanks EdinDevon - I'm in no hurry, been waiting years as it is! I was tempted to dive in for a 6D but lots of sites say there is an upgrade due, so I thought I may as well wait. If it's not a huge improvement the 6D looks like a fantastic camera for the price, and I'm sure I could save some money buying what would be an older model.

Thanks for the warm welcome :)
