JPEG or JPG or jpeg or jpg or…
TIFF or TIF or tiff or tif…

So, RAW or raw?

The term "JPEG", acronym for the Joint Photographic Experts Group, is
a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images.

TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format, is a computer file format for
storing raster graphics images.

RAW is the acronym for… nothing. It is an adjective.

WIKI:
In linguistics, an adjective (abbreviated adj.) is a describing word,
the main syntactic role of which is to qualify a noun or noun phrase,
giving more information about the object signified

So RAW is not RAW but raw? … why?

WIKI:
Raw: image(1) format, a variety of standardized image(1) files used by
digital cameras containing the unprocessed data from the sensor

(1) This is a mistake on the Wiki page as it is not an image and not
a format but just data. It should read: "data file".

At this point, RAW raw is an adjective that qualifies data files like .NEF, CR2, .3fr, .ari,
.arw, .bay, .crw, .cap, .data, .dcs, .dcr, .drf, .eip, .erf, .iiq, .k25, .kdc, .mdc, .mef, .mos,
.mrw, .nrw, .obm, .orf, .pef, .ptx, .pxn, .r3d, .raf, .raw, .rwl, .rw2, .rwz, .sr2, .srf, .srw,
.x3f — capitalize or not, are all raw files from different camera
manufacturers and
their respective data is raw, unprocessed from the sensor.

…but then why RAW?

Different apps will save or export images and add an extension at the end of the
file name like .JPEG or .JPG or. jpeg or .jpg or… .TIFF or .TIF or .tiff or .tif or…etc.
So when
ever it is spoken of Jpg of Tif (whichever way it may be written!), we all
understand what it refers to.

To make sure that .NEF, CR2, .3fr, .ari, .arw, .bay, .crw, .cap, .data, .dcs, .dcr, .drf,
.eip, .erf, .iiq, .k25, .kdc, .mdc, .mef, .mos, .mrw, .nrw, .obm, .orf, .pef, .ptx, .pxn,
.r3d, .raf, .raw, .rwl, .rw2, .rwz, .sr2, .srf, .srw, and .x3f, will be understood by every
one and all, RAW was adopted to design all these files containing raw data as a
generic term, becoming a noun when needed and capitalized to give it the same
easy typographic recognition as JPG and TIFF.

This is not something I invented (as I was honoured with the invention of DRL on this
very forum) but it is something that is recognized and adopted by the greater number
of pros I know in the trade.

Talking of JPEG or JPG or jpeg or jpg, whatever happened to JPEG2000 or JPG2000 or jpeg2000 or jpg2000?

Wasn't it supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread?

In use across the broadcast industry as a very low delay codec. Doesn't seem to have caught on in stills.

I wondered that if it's RAW or raw :)
When I saw the post title I assumed that it was another one of those raw vs jpeg debates :D

Interesting, I'm one of those pedantic lazy buggers, I know that it's really only raw but I write RAW because everyone else does.

You're bored aren't you?
:ROFLMAO:

Last night was, Terry, my night shift turn, had to cover until 04:00.
  • Yesterday, I had to call for help on a thread cause I couldn't make
myself understood by a member. Help came and all was well and
    I learned quite a bit.
  • Last night, a reply came up that I could not understand because
the level of language was, I think, too high. I did seek net translation
from different sources and still have difficulties.
  • Since quite a while, I am often corrected when I used RAW
and told it is raw and, finally,
  • I was honoured falsely with the creation of the DRL acronym.
This was compositional text exercise in English where I could address
these points without (hopefully) being too obscure… was not bored! :)

Love raw.:):canon:

Just to throw something into the mix, at one time DOS/Widnows could only cope with 3 character file extensions so JPEG became JPG and TIFF became TIF. Unix and therefore the early WWW was/is case sensitive and whilst now most webservers are case insensitive in the early days it often mattered, request a jpeg when the file was named JPEG and it would not be found.

Personally I use and like RAW when referring to the file type because it instantly disambiguates the file type from any other interpretation in a sentence - e.g. "that's a good raw image". I'm sure pedants would argue that such disambiguation should come from better use of grammar but I need all the help I can get on that score:

"That's a good image which conveys a sense of raw emotion"

"That's a good image captured in raw format"

I wouldn't have replied except that you've said that this was an English composition exercise and thus a bit of pedantry seems justified..

You've said it yourself. JPEG, JPG, TIFF and TIF are acronyms. Raw is an adjective.

You could argue that they're all so commonly used that they have become nouns in their own right - in which case they'd all be lower case except at the start of a sentence.

medium rare for me :)

I now see JPEG* has appeared. Higher quality than jpeg fine?
I like RAW as to me it means the data has to go through a further process to be usable.

What the hell is DRL?

Seriously.... what is DRL? Never heard of it... Google shows nothing... no one I know has heard of it.

What is it?

Don't think so

"as I was honoured with the invention of DRL on this
very forum."
I think that was a reference to others not understanding the term and assuming Kodiak had invented it.

I use lower case for all of them because it saves having to use the shift key.
