Non UK Crashed DC-3 on Sólheimasandur beach

When I was there in March the Road was closed so people just walked to it. We parked just off the main road on the bank leading to the gate.. probably enough room for 10 cars iirc.

A police car stopped and I asked him why the road was closed and he didn't know...

its private land, its been closed due to damage by careless people.

It must have closed right at the time we were there as the policeman said it had been open a few days before... bad timing for us I guess

There are a couple of 4x4 South Island trips that have agreements with land owners and still take guests to the site in Super Jeeps. Check (I think) Extreme Iceland and Guide to Iceland.

@Jase yeah it was closed in around mid march time - if you click back to the 1st page of the thread, there are some links to articles at the time.

@Impspeed i'll be taking the budget friendly walking approach, if weather is suitable :)

LOL yeah that was on the 14th of March and I was there on the 15th, great timing!

@Jase sods law! i was never planning on driving so not a lot of difference for me, was always gonna walk it :)

Well I need not have worried about spotting the gate from the road, or getting lost. i visited Monday......... I didn't think it would be THAT busy. there was about 30 cars at the side of the road and a trail of people coming back and forth when I got there about 530pm. I stayed until roughly 8pm as i'd planned to go for sunset, I'd planned to stay for NL spotting if the forecast was favourable, but it was too cloudy so I headed back. The path is clearly marked so no trouble there. So many people so the later you can go is prob the best bet for getting a decent photo, or early early morning i guess. Drones and all sorts. I wish I had known about it in 2007 when i visited!
