Yes
gaming rig needs a new cards and was looking at price drops of 970s but any better getting the new 1060 for about £50 more?

GTX1060 is a recent card, and GTX970 been around for 2 years... Advantages of GTX970 is that it has wider bus interface (256bit, GTX1060 has 192bit) and also it has 1664 CUDA cores (where GTX1060 has 1280). Back in a day GTX970 was pretty decent card (still is today actually!) as it was not from GTX900's bottom range.... GTX1060 is from bottom range... If you don't use any applications what would perfom better using more CUDA cores, I woul choose newer generation card (most likely). All depends of what sort of games you will be playing etc. maybe worth to hunt for used GTX980 etc :)

970 has no advantages over 1060, more cuda cores are completely irrelevant when what it has outperform the 970.

The evga 1060 SC is the one to go for and equals a 980 in most benchmarks.

The gtx 970 supports sli and the 1060 does not so if you intend to take advantage of cheap second hand gtx 970's (selling for around £130 on various forums) they could be the way forward. Obviously if your comparing new prices the 1060 is a better option as its newer, performs better with less power, however no option to sli later when it starts to struggle.
