Nikon D500 FPS Question

Evening all .... I noticed when I first got the camera but wasn't sure what setting I'd changed so just forgot about it

Today I was out sitting in a hide with my D500 and a friend and his Canon 7D MkII and he asked why I was shooting in Continuous Low and I said I'm not it's on High to which he said it should be firing faster than that!

I was at 2000/1 ISO1000 and AF-C I changed it to AF-S and it was like I changed to a different camera the FPS difference was something else!

Why would that affect it?
Is there a setting I can change to get it firing as fast as possible all the time?

Thanks

Fire on focus to fire on release
Should still shoot at max fps set to fire on focus though shouldn't it, assuming it's not having an issue gaining focus? I have my D750 set to focus and it still fires at max frame rate.

Well obviously assuming its not missing focus if it doesn't focus it won't fire duh.

"Duh", lol

But if it's to do with release priority it would suggest that it was struggling with focus, which then begs the question why ;)

OP what focus mode were you using? (single point, group, 3d tracking)

Thanks for the reply's it was set to
AFC - Focus
AFS - Focus

So I've changed AF-C to Release!

Thanks
As above though it should fire at full fps assuming it's gaining focus, so I'd be asking why it wasn't focussing. Release is OK, but do you really want shots that're potentially not in focus? I use AF-C with priority set to focus and I get full FPS on the D750. Of course I've not tried the D500 but I'd expect it to be the same, it's be a poor limitation if you couldn't fire at the full FPS whilst maintaining focus.

I'm not sure how you're struggling with this. Release will trigger so it'll fire at top fps without it even obtaining focus all the time. It's called a suggestion to get max fps, did you offer an alternative?

The question was why is it not firing at max fps.

I think you're misreading/misinterpreting what I'm saying ;) I'm not struggling with it, and agree with what you're saying. All I'm saying is that I wouldn't be happy with it not firing at 10fps whilst still gaining focus and would be more 'concerned' about that (y)

I'm not, I use afc to release all the time with moving subjects and 1.4 lenses, my hit rate is better ;)

Just to confirm this has resolved the issue I will try the other options tomorrow as I've got another hide session booked
Has it resolved it or is it just a workaround?

Interesting. When I've shot wildlife and sports my hit rate is worse with release. I guess we're all different and use whatever works for us (y)

I've never had an issue with frame rate with either though (unless it's blatantly dark and it's struggling with focus anyway ;))

Yup, I'd rather miss 1 or 2 in a blast than the focus rack and I miss the whole sequence.

Well there is that ..... I'll contact Nikon but as long as it's firing properly tomorrow I'll be happy
I'd run some tests before contacting Nikon, might just be that your subject was lacking contrast or in the shade etc. I'd try on a subject that AF shouldn't have an issue with and then try in both release and focus priority.

Not really cause I've not once mentioned it has an issue with locking focus all I said was there was a difference in FPS between AFS AND AFC
To be fair you did say that you've now changed AF-C to release and that's 'fixed the issue' ;)

Correct but I also said changing from AFC to AFS fixed it so changing AFC to release doesn't mean it wasn't locking on focus
AF-S set to focus just means that it will require focus once and then fire off the rest of the shots without refocusing meaning it can fire at full fps.

AF-C set to focus means that it has to refocus between each shot meaning that if it's not gaining focus fast enough it will slow fps down.

AF-C set to release means it doesn't have to acquire focus meaning it can shoot at full fps.

So from what you've said it sounds to me as though in AF-C it's not gaining focus fast enough. This is either a contrast, light, lens, or camera issue IMO.
