Daughter and I have two 350d's, we feel like upgrading so what would we buy and why?
She is going traveling soon and whats the best images she can but obviously doesn't want to take a suit case full of stuff.

The best camera for the job is the camera you have with you at the time!

Well, the 350d is quite a small body. My wife has small hands and didn't want a larger body (I have a 1ds and a 70d), however also didn't want to go with the entry level. We decided on the 100d at the time, although I'd also wonder about the newer mirrorless options. Are you looking to buy new? Interested in video?

The trouble with mirrorless for travel is the sonys eat batteries! Live view and stuff

Most good compacts now will out-perform or equal the 350D.
Are you happy carrying an SLR or is that becoming an issue?
I'd suggest a compact that records RAW and a large sensor - if a Canon fan they have a nice range.
Sony RX100 gets big votes here but they have all improved considerably the last few years.

.

Very much depends on what you mean by 'out perform'

In reasonable light a 350d with a couple of my favourite lenses* will create beautiful images no compact could get close to.

Sigma 35mm Art, Canon 85mm 1.8, though the 17-55IS is quite special too.

But back to the OP, depending on usage and budget really, just 'upgrade' isn't really enough info for a recommendation.

I started with a 350D, still have it and it is quite capable of superb images, it's drawback is the high ISO performance, I upgraded to the 7D shortly after it came out, which I am still using. It is a lot heavier and also larger than the 350D. I suspect something like a 70D may suit better if size is the problem.

Thanks Phil
Budget would be about £200, it would be a bonus if it had video but she has a Go Pro so not essential.

She has no real issues with the 350d but fancies something better newer etc.
In my mind Wifi and Video would be a good bonus but possibly out of budget.
I assume all our 350d lenses will fit the newer stuff?

Be careful with this. If you have EF-S lenses they will not fit full frame cameras such as the 5D MkI-MkIV.

They will fit any 400D/450D/XXD or 20D/30D/YYD or 7D body; any Canon crop sensor body basically.

Also if you go travelling make sure your daughter brings a spare camera. Could be your 350D or a good compact.

If you do want to spend £200 upgrading, personally I'd look at a 100D or a 600D body if you are happy with the size/weight of the 350D. The 600D will get you video but no wifi. The 40D for about £100 is probably the best value upgrade, but beware that the body will be heavier and bulkier than the 350D, which may not be ideal if you are travelling.

Pretty much what I was about to say! Would be interesting to know you lens line up as your budget might be better split between lenses and a body. For example if your still using the original kit lens from the 350d the modern is version is a massive improvement for very little money!

550d would be a nice upgrade and within budget.

To second Phil's post what lenses do you have? Would buying them be a better investment? My 350d had problems on its sensor so I had to replace it but I would still be using today if not for that.

Went through this exact process. Had issues with my old 350d body, probably fixable but fancied an upgrade.
Initially went for an eos-m which whilst good in it's own right wasn't really a dslr replacement in many ways imo.
Recently picked up a used 60d for not much outside your budget and it is certainly a nicer feeling body with a much bigger screen, quicker operation, more focus points, more dials for adjusting exposure etc. However I'm not sure I'm getting any better images from it over the 350d. As others have stated what exactly are you trying to gain from the upgrade?

Thanks we have a lot to look at!.
The dark room (emptying the shed!) and selling some of the stuff she is not going to use to fund the dark room is taking priority but I will keep you posted.
So whats the difference between the 600 and the 100?
Looking at the 40d I fancy one my self just so I can see the screen

I shoot with a 1dx 2 primarily and I took a friend out who wanted me to show her how to use her new camera.

She had a 100D and I found it surprisingly good to use. Loved the touch screen on it also.

Not sure of all the specs but the images from it were nice too.
