New Sigma lenses

Watching the 135mm 1.8 with interest :D

100-400 seems like a bit of an oddball especially considering it's still 6.3 on the long end, unless it's priced very much lower than the 150-600 C.

I do wish they'd come up with a modern version of the 100-300 F4 with stabilisation, I'd buy that as soon as it hit the shelves if it was anywhere near as nice as the old one.

If the 24-70 is anything like their other "Art" glass it should be good, although I fear it might suffer the same fate as the 24-105, excellent IQ but built like a brick compared to the other similar lenses from Nikon, Canon and even Pentax.

The 24-70 VR is over 1KG - 'hopefully' this might be less. Looks quite compact compared to the Nikon too.

Its almost exactly (about 1cm shorter I think) the same size as the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC. The Nikon is 5cm longer and 250g heavier than the Tamron.

Nikon 24-70 VR - 88mm x 154.5mm 1070g - 82mm Filter
Sigma 24-70 OC - 88.9mm x 106.7 TBCg - 82mm Filter

So it is a lot shorter! Be interesting to see how much it extends.

135mm art - 101.6mm x 114.3mm 1130g
14mm - 241.3mm x 127mm 1170g
100-400 - 86.4mm x 182.3mm 1160g

It looks fairly compact, I am sure the image quality will be great. The Nikon 24-70's are really quick and accurate to focus so hopefully this will also be the same.

I am quite liking the possibility of a 24-70 + 135 combo for weddings, pairing the zoom with an 85 always feels too close.

Im thinking it will weigh aound the same as the Nikon based on the above figures. Not sure why Sigma have weights for all but the 24-70!

I don't care about the size and weight of the new 24-70 as long as it delivers same or better IQ and AF accuracy as brand new Canon copy with the added benefit of better durability and stabilisation.

The 135mm also looks very tempting, as well as the recent 85mm.

Very much agree with this, one of my favourite motorsport/zoo lenses and a nice balance between the super expensive/big 2.8s and the slower zooms. Still nothing else like it out there really.

I still think the addition of a dock is a master stroke. All things being even between lenses of different brands, then it's enough to sway me towards sigma.

The new Tamron lenses have a "dock" too.

Sigma lenses do look great - I was tempted to get the 50/24 Art lenses rather than the Nikon versions, but teh price and sheer size of the 50 puts me off a little.

Fair do's

Although I have one for my 35/50 art already!

This makes me more likely to get a sigma if all other things are equal (and of course provided the lens is good!)

How do the Sigmas hold up agaunst general wear and tear? The surfaces look kind of prone to scratches etc?

@Sir SR How do you find the 50?

It's a beast - big and magical!! Best 50 I've ever used.

The new art coatings are better than the old sigma coating that used to flake away.

Downside is that it's expensive.

I'm finding the 100-400mm a very odd lens too, relatively slow aperture. I'm sure Sigma have done their research but I do wonder who will choose this lens over the other options. I still wish someone would make a 400mm f4 for Nikon.

Just a heads up folks, Sigma is raising prices come March 1st.
Probably looking at around a 20% hike so buy now if you can do so.

One reason I can think of for the 100-400mm, is their giving an option to people who may find the 150-600mm too heavy? 100-400mm is a good option then for Nikon shooters as we don't have anything cheaper in this length (80-400mm Nikon is very expensive) and its a option over the 70-300mm providing it's not too heavy...... IIRC Canon have a 100-400mm lens which is also expensive.

If its a good lens they could possibly coin in.

Well that's just realigning UK prices now exchange rates are much lower...

Yeah I get that but it's just that it's f6.3, I don't understand why they didn't make it f5.6. Yes it's only 1/3 stop but it's disappointing (IMO). Had it matched the Nikon I'm sure it'd be a clear winner, as it is I don't think they'll take as much of a chunk away from the Nikon sales as they might have done. But it's all just speculation on my behalf ;)

To keep price down and be much cheaper than the others.

I just bought another Sigma C 150-600mm and it's now at £699.00, my other two were £739.00. You would expect this new one to be cheaper? For 100mm more than the 70-300mm I would expect this to be sub £500.00, but you never know with a new price premium.;)

It a lens which interests me due to my problems. I find my 70-300mm a tad too short when out, after using the 600mm at home.

Are exchange rates 20% lower?
Well in June 2016 you got 1.45 dollars for every pound now you get 1.25 dollars for each pound. Closer to 15% admittedly, but the UK prices for some lenses have been relatively cheaper for a while e.g. Sigma 50mm Art is $950 (£805 once VAT and duty is taken into account) vs £600 UK price.

Well the 150-600mm C was around £1200 on first release IIRC, so I wouldn't expect the 100-400mm to be under £500. However, they do have to bear in mind their own 150-600mm so maybe it will.

Makes you wonder why Apple, Canon and Nikon raised their prices by 25-30% then
