WEC/ELMS Silverstone/ British GT Oulton Park Bank Holiday

Hi, for the last couple of years I've been to WEC/ELMs on the Saturday but last year lost out on some photo opportunities when WEC practice was snowed off.

I'm trying to weigh up whether to go on Race Day this year. A fair bit more expensive on Race day but the WEC cars obviously get a lot more track time on Race Day. Access for photos is quite reasonable on the Saturday as it's quieter. I'm wondering what it's like on Race Day. Are opportunities much more restricted by crowds? I found it's not too bad trying to get access through fence holes on practise/qualifying day.

Also if I go on the Saturday again I'll potentially have Sunday free with the family before going to Oulton Park on the Monday for the British GT championship. Can anyone advise how busy this is likely to be? I've only to been to Oulton park for the BTCC practice/qualifying on a Saturday before now.

I was lucky enough to get a Canon 100-400mk2 for my 40th in September but I've not had chance to get out with it since due to another new arrival in October :). Looking forward to giving it some exercise!

Im afriad i cannot answer the WEC question as we normally view them at Le Mans.

The british GT will attract a smaller crowd than the BTCC so photo opportunities will certainly be higher.
Alternatively the British GT is on free to view TV this year.

I usually go to the GT races on the qualifying day as it is quieter, and easier to get good positions for shooting, the cars have a decent amount of track time and there is usually at least one real race from the support groups, plus its cheaper

Thanks, I've had something come up for the Sunday so I think I'm going to go for WEC/ELMs on the Saturday and then make a call on the Monday for Oulton park closer to the time.

Shame they've ended up on the same weekend this year.

Although the crowds at WEC on Sunday are reasonable, they're spread over such a vast area that there are no problems getting to the fence or the stands anywhere at all. You can also get to the infield and the balcony over the pits. The balcony is the only place I found it crowded. You have to bide your time a bit for someone to move on and dive for the gap!

Thanks, maybe I'll give the Sunday a try next year.

You haven't mentioned it so in case you don't know, you can go to the WEC on the Friday for £10 with a great timetable so there are cars on track pretty much all day.

(That's what I am doing!)

OP- if you haven't made the call yet on Monday, I would say it is nowhere near as busy as the BTCC race day and I have always been able to enjoy the racing whilst getting the shots I wanted. Agree it's a shame about the two meets coinciding this year; I've gone for silverstone Sunday only, bar torrential forecasted. Went to the race day for both last year, and although busy at silverstone thought it was good value with only the gaps in fences mid corner being busy (if you've been you'll know what I mean!)

Either way, have a good weekend :)

Thanks for the replies. Heading over to Silverstone tomorrow. Think the GT at Oulton Park is going to have to wait another year although think I'll give race day a try when I do.

Want to get up to Oulton Park this year and I'm quite partial to an Aston so maybe I'll try the Aston Martin Owners Club event in May.
