The new Sony A9 - What are your thoughts

Overall, from a quick play I like it a lot, it does a LOT right, with native lenses it works brilliantly, size wise with the primes and adaptor is a bit big so I won't go into the size is smaller than a DSLR argument as it is moot.

£4500 though.....if a 5D4 is £3500, is this worth an extra £1000 ??? I think it could be....Personally though, I rather wait for A7R3 if they could just lower the FPS to 10 (plenty) and leave the rest of the tech in.

I think its marketed against the canon 1D or nikon 5D series not the 5D or D750 series of cameras.
So its ever so slightly cheaper than competition and also smaller (but once tele lenses comes into play size is a moot point like you said)

Whether its actually on level of 1D/D5 series I wouldn't know, you know more...

I don't think Ray shoots with a 1dx. He uses a 5d series body for wedding and portrait work I think.

Was it his processing/production or were the images really that soft? Perhaps we can blame YouTube but I saw nothing there to make the camera worth £450 let alone £4500. As for the surfers? That was comical! Well there is no decent longer focal length lens made for this camera so we just have to accept this limitation but even with the lens used I was expecting much more.

I have no doubt that the A9 is, in reality, a MUCH better camera than this guy shows. He claims it is great but shows images that make it look pants! This guy is not a good advert for Sony!

Which images where soft?the portrait flash ones where proper sharp but agree that the low light ones where a bit soft

Watched it again and the YouTube video had defaulted to low definition! Watched it again - much better! I should have checked before posting as I know Sony are better than that looked at first. Still don't know why YouTube did this - it doesn't normally.

Hi all.

So i managed to pick up the New Sony A9 today and did a quick unboxing video of it.

I have not even turned the camera on as i only had time to record and edit this video.

I will be sure to test out its many features.

Any specific things you want me to test, let me know

Video below. Give it a couple of minutes at the time of posting this until it is live on the link provided!

Cheers Jonney. Does look cool.
I guess some shots under artificial light with the electronic shutter.

I'll try that in a pub or at home tonight. Edit. Let's see what the below results bring

Hi

1) does the a9 take multiple exposures on the same frame (in camera)?

2) What is the wake up speed of the body from cold and also when in sleep mode? - can you be specific please?

Cheers Don

Here's photographic dynamic range (1DXII vs. D5 vs. A9 estimate) -
http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon EOS 1D X Mark II,Nikon D5,Sony ILCE-9(estimat)

The readings for A9 is only an estimate, but my point nikon's low ISO DR is lower than canon's but it pulls ahead in high ISO performance/DR. This is because these cameras are generally made to be shot high speeds at high ISO not for landscape shooting on a tripod at base ISO. It makes sense for them to be specialised for that purpose. Nikon which generally has very high DR in base ISO is considerably lower in case of their flagship because they have better high ISO performance.

If you want a high DR body you should be looking at D810/A7R/K1 type bodies.

But estimates seem to point A9 matched both canon and nikon at both ends making best of both worlds per say. We won't know for sure till we see proper tests which shouldn't be far off now.

and....that's why people should concentrate on actual real world usage instead of DPReview/DxO mark scores performed in lab conditions. People complain that Sony release a new body every 25 minutes but when the online market spends its' time analysing graphs and charts to the nth degree so willy-waving articles can be written, I'm not surprised a manufacturer is always playing catch up. Buy a camera that fits you as a photographer, learn how to use it in the real world and go out and take some photos (that's not aimed at the OP by the way, more of a general suggestion)

I will post some shots this evening. Am at work but did take the camera with me.

i need to buy more batteries though and the battery grip

It's so fast that I just got a speeding ticket!
Jonny do you still get 20FPS with the metabones attached, or does it drop to 10, i did read with A mount adapted its 10 but wondered what it was like with metabones, and can it keep up with the speed of this thing..

thanks

I get 20 . just tested it on my Canon 100-400. It focuses slow when from near to far away but faster then the a7r2 which was unusable.

If you dial your manual focus close enough to the intended subject and then focus will be fast like my 5d4.

The metabones ain't even compatible with the a9 officially

Thanks Jonny, I must admit id be eyeing up that 400mm if I had one...id want the full BHP from her and focus speed...

It's more than that, 40.5c. Which is quite hot, you don't get that in the air, normally can get that hot easily on surface though on an "average" summer's day, like 30c, especially if the surface is black.
It was over 40 in direct sunlight in my back garden in northern england a couple of weeks ago. Over in Thailand you get hotter.

Hearing rumors that Sony has pulled the firmware update.
