B&W Let's see your Black and White photos

"Middleton Top"

The lone wagon stands at the top of the incline on Middleton Top. It is a welcome reminder of what was there many years ago on the Cromford and High Peak Railway in Derbyshire.

This was a pretty crappy photo in colour - I made the mistake of using a CPL on my Fuji X100F without trying it out first and it overcooked things. However in B&W it does have some merit and I have tried my best with the limited software that I have. It was shot last week whilst walking the Purbecks - the dog on a lead in one hand (to stop him leaping over the cliff after the wildlife) and the camera in the other - which isn't the best way to get a decent photo but it's the only way I have :)

hi DAD
a crop from the left would do two things
transform this into a landscape...the sea isnt really a major player here..the eye would then tend to stop at the promontory at the top left
and
get rid of the sense that the horizon isnt level...perhaps just a tropical illusion...
and a full fence post in the lower right...just pulls the eye in better
cheers

Well Mr Toad, I think I'm inclined to agree with you re the cropping. I will have another go - btw the horizon is actually level (I did check as I hate sloping horizons) but as the coastline goes in and out you get the impression that it isn't.

thanks
re the horizon...coastal shots where the sea meets a rugged shore always throw up this horizon thing
that is why i said it was a tropical illusion...
like you i can see no reason why the natural horizontals cant be checked...i use my cropping square to check mine
on buildings etc its usually the verticals
glad of your comments
cheers

I prefer the second one.

well thank you john
i have done some in past times like the second and found stonework is more pleasing..that is why i did this one just to see if i was perhaps trying something which others found a bit underworked

Wisner 4x5 TMAX100

Exposure f45 10 seconds
(metered exposure was f45 1.5 sec. I added 2 stops to get into zone 7 plus 2/3rds stop for bellows factor
Developed for 7 sec at 19 deg which was -15%
Scanned using Epson V850 and cleaned up in PScc
My plan is to take the same picture today on 8x10 and make a contact print...........
All in all very happy with the outcome

Very nice rendition - is it my eyes or is the vase leaning to the left? Also I think it would be great if the base of the vase and the leaf on the right were in the frame - otherwise it's superb.

Basically, if someone said they were taking photos of flowers in black and white, I would tell them not to bother - colour is one of the essential joys of flowers. In this case I would be very wrong. Agree with Rosedalelad about the lean of the vase (but not about the tip of the leaf).
