D500

Some pics of Cricket from Saturday. An example of why I wanted 10fps rather than the 7-8fps I had before. The sequence would not have been so close. Luckily I think one team wanted an early finish, because they were getting out pretty quickly after each other. ;)

A couple using the 70-300 AF-P VR. Both @ 300mm.

First is Bumble (B. Terrestris I think on Aquilegia. Heavily cropped.

Second is a cocoon on a dead tree trunk. It is set on a piece of peeling bark. The cocoon is 4cms wide and 2 cms deep.

I think whatever it was has emerged. I've asked over on the nature forum.

Anyone shoot in jpeg or RAW + jpeg?
If so, what do you find works best in settings under Picture Control and 'additional' settings i.e. Saturation +/-, Sharpening +/-, Contrast +/- etc?

I had been using jpeg for motorsport, although I've just started trying RAW again and can't decide which I prefer. Typical jpeg settings for me are: Standard, Clarity +1, Sharpening +5, Saturation +0.75 and Contrast +0.75.

I do. Have the jpeg on default. Standard picture control. Like to be able to dial down the highlights a la Fuji though..maybe in a future firmware update...not holding my breath..

Happy enough with it..

RAW for birdies and RAW + jpeg for football.

Jpegs are good enough for most of the football and only use the RAW if I've got a great shot that I want to edit properly.

Jpeg is set to vivid btw (y)

Agree Jpeg mainly for Rugby and Footy due to the sheer mass of shots you'll take
Raw-Jpeg for Motorsport for that added tweaking.
Raw for Birds

RAW all the time for me, even for sports. I have no need to deliver anything quickly to anyone, and I don't know when I will need the maximum amount of data to produce the best image. This camera does not slow down in any way by choosing one format over another. RAW may produce more data, but I have loads of space. :) If no edits are made to a RAW file, then it is an extra step to save as a JPEG. If the JPEG and RAW have to be edited in any way, then it is a similar amount of work, with a little bit more flexibility with the RAW file. And once you have chosen the images you want, you can delete what you don't want to keep.

With the buffer on the D500 with a fast card it is just how quickly you fill the card, and with a couple of fast cards that may be awhile. ;)

Each to there own though, whatever works for you. :)

Haven't posted much lately for different reasons............Anyway I continue to be impressed with some of the results I'm getting with the D500 and Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary.

A first for me, we had a family of Greenfinches with four fledglings visit the other day and considering the weather and ISO's around the 3k mark, I think the combo worked admirably, especially as the photos were taken through our double glazed kitchen door.

Considering they're shot through double glazing, they're absolutely fantastic Simon!

There is lots of detail there.

Are these full frame or crops?

Very nice SJ, esp. as taken through glass.
That lens does indeed produce fine results.
Are they cropped at all?

These are brill. Your setup is the same as mine. Cracking lens for the money. I continue to be impressed by the D500

Send me you window cleaner, clean glass!! Joking aside, lovely pictures.
..Bit of vinegar and some Fairy Liquid and a window squeegee works wonders, may not be to the professionals standard on here.;)

Thanks folks for your comments.

@wezza13 @Peter123 just had a quick look at the originals and as a rough guess their approx 30-40% crops on all of them.

anyone tried the exposue setting that is suppose to stop blowing the highlights ??
whats your view on it ?
does it really work ?
I'm thinking if the whites are not blown it will underexpose the rest of the pic
maybe I'm wrong

I tried it but it didn't seem to stop some highlights blowing.

Have you not cycled through the metering options and wondered what the spot metering with the * option was? :p

Nope. Doing it now...but I don't spot meter.

not tried it yet as only see hawk once in a while so no time to fudge between settings

You can actually set up that particular metering option on a function key so that you can quickly change to that option just by pressing and holding the at function key down.

never thought about that , will try it good idea :ty:

Honestly never found Spot with highlight protection to be very helpful, YMMV :)

Have had a D500 hired out from Lenses For Hire for a few days - I must say I am very impressed! Had a magical experience last night with a large family of Otters, and was shooting at sunset in very difficult conditions - backlit, in shadow and mostly overcast. The autofocus seems very accurate - definitely quicker to lock on to what I am trying to photograph, rather than what is in front or behind. It is very quiet (continous quiet mode is awesome - especially for Otters) even the 10fps is a good bit less sharp sounding than the D800E I have. I tried ISOs up to 12800 and felt that it still looks pretty good for my needs.

Love the deeper grip on the D500 over the D800. I tried Group AF on birds in flight and it seemed to follow them quite well - pics all turned out poor though , due 30mph wind and updrafts, and grim light.

Anybody want a D800E?
