Is it just me or does anyone else have "this" problem.

I buy stuff from amazon on an irregular basis, but twice now, I have "discovered" ( by accident) that I also signed up for "Prime" with my purchase.
With each purchase I now check that I am not a member.
I always pay any P&P due, or if its free go for the "standard delivery"
With that, I am now more inclined to shop at the evil bay, these days as most offer free delivery.

I don't buy enough to warrant the benefits of prime, nor have any interest in their TV.
Both times,, there was no harm done, as I cancelled within the month, without actually using it, and got a refund.
But that's not the point is it?

Are they now becoming like the insurance companies that renew, unless you tell them not too, by giving you prime, whether you want it or not
And leaving the onus on you to cancel?

No. It always asks,
Well that's weird, in that case, I have never clicked yes or what ever you have to do to sign up. As, as above I have no interest in in.

Amazon can be a fun lot to deal with at times.

I have just spent most of the morning and afternoon going backward and forward via email to try and get a VAT refund sorted

A few months back I ordered some stuff from them and failed to click the opt out button so ended up with it on the free trial. To avoid any chance of being charged, I went straight to the opt out after free trial page and opted out. The month of it free did mean I could check out the grand tour for nowt and decide that that was overpriced at free! I/we don't order enough from Amazon to warrant having the free quick delivery and since we can usually arrange to be in when we're expecting something, we do. Even if we know we'll be out, we have a meter cupboard outside which houses the recycling bin as well so we can leave the keys in the door and get the delivery person to stick the delivery in there and post the keys through the letter box - works well for us!

Quick point, delivery is never 'free' it's hidden in the item price including Prime items on Amazon where the cost tends to be higher than non Prime examples. There are other reasons to have Prime, if it were just for the delivery it certainly wouldn't be worth it.

There is a glitch in the Amazon system that you can use to get free prime membership for as long as you want to put the effort in.

You need to sign up for a new account with a unique email address, one you have not used for an Amazon account before.

Once you have your new account set up, head over to prime membership and sign up, once the prime membership sign up is complete head over to your prime settings and turn off auto re-new, this way you will get prime free for a month and will not be charged when the month is up.

You can do this as many times as you like as long as you use a unique email address each time you sign up.

You can use the same credit/debit card and delivery details for each account, all you need is that unique email address each time.

You don't say if it is a free trial. I have twice "accidentally" signed up for a free trial. I just take advantage of it for the month and cancel. Don't wait a month and forget to cancel, you can cancel immediately and the trial still runs for a month.
I also find that around September I get offered free 6 month trial and then half price because I have used an *@soton.ac.uk email address though I am not a student.

Lots of disgruntled customers :(

Fair point, well presented ;)

I don't think it was, the month wasn't up, when I realised, and the comment I got back after I cancelled, was along the lines of
As you haven't used prime this month, you will receive a full refund.

We had that several months ago, but as we were ordering loads of bits on the run up to Christmas, we left it for 3 weeks before cancelling.

Funnily enough my moneyboss ordered a couple of items today & it again defaulted to prime. Luckily she spotted it & declined. It's a royal PITA!!!!!

In the 2 or 3 years we've used amaz0n to buy stuff, `prime` would barely have made any difference to deliveries for us. Many times goods ordered on `free 2-5 days delivery` have still turned up within 24 hrs (even on a Saturday & once on a Sunday)

They've made that bit of the web site very deceptive, I think. I ordered something a few days ago and on the page that tries to sign you up for Prime the 'Sign me up' button was the most prominent, then there was one, less prominent, that said something like 'No thanks' in much bolder print than 'Sign me up later' which appeared below the no thanks. The option to decline everything was very easy to overlook. I very clearly clicked 'No thanks sign me up later' before I realised what was going on. Very sneaky. I buy mainly ebooks from them using 1 click ordering, so they could have been charging me before I realised I'd unwittingly signed up.

I think it defaults the option to sign up and you actively have to change it to "no thanks". Could be easy to miss if rushing.
Pretty much as I thought when I said \/ in that case :(

I'll just have to watch them like a hawk, and /or order more stuff from evil bay. ( I don't use any of their dedicated items, such as the ebooks, or TV. anyway)

Yes, the default is 'accept'. Always read the small print - where the decline option usually is!

Also it's fun when you try to cancel a free trial. You have to go through about five dialogues and it never "no I don't want it" but usually something like "yes, I do want to give up my benefits"!

Maybe i don't use amazon as much as you guys (i thought i used it a lot but maybe not) but i've never been tricked into signing up or thought it was not really obvious when i'm on a screen where i have to opt out. I had a free trial a few years ago so thought i wasn't eligble for another but i have since read that you can have a free trial more than once. I might wait til Xmas to sign up and take advantage of the delivery. i don't have a way to watch stuff on amazon prime so its never appealed to me to sign up as it would be a waste. I don't really get how you can accidentally get signed up but it seems to happen to loads of people so perhaps i am missing something. i use it through browser on PC, browser on android and the app and have never felt i've been tricked into signing up - bombarded perhaps, but not tricked.

Just a point worth noting: as far as I can tell, it's possible to get Prime for £7.99 per month (minimum 1 month). Useful if you don't want to pay for a full year's worth.

When was the last time you used Amazon? I bought from it the other day and the page had definitely changed since the last time I used it, probably a few months ago.

As above I hardly use it so even £7.99 / month is a waste of money, to me anyway.
If I find something that I want ( sometimes need :D ) that is going to cost P&P
I head over to evil bay, as most people that sell on Amazon also sell there.
Usually free P&P ( and for the same price) or I'll hunt around until I find someone that does offer free P&P ( for the same selling price)
Its become more of a game than a matter of principle :D

I got a 6 month free trial as I am a student (we'll sort of) it then renewed for 12 months for £39. I don't agree that the free delivery is included in the price as mentioned above. You just need to check the deals. I like the next day delivery service and for me that alone is worth the fee.

Yes, I prefer to find genuine UK sellers on eBay or sometimes I'll buy small priced items direct from China. I used to use Amazon a lot but then I noticed that when items sold by small sellers became popular Amazon started selling them direct effectively cutting out the original sellers -- no figures on that of course but it was my impression. That, and them not paying tax here too

i have a question

i buy very little from Amazon but i am signed up to the Amazon tv package
does this give me free delivery if i do buy products from Amazon or is it a different subscription ?

You can also add however many delivery details and card details to Amazon prime. So you can share with trusted people. We use the MILs account with our bank card and our address.

They do something called Amazon Prime Video which - according to Google - is £5.99/month but when you click through it takes you to an "Amazon Prime" landing page which is £7.99/month.

The wife uses Amazon Pantry, I use the unlimited photo storage as a disconnected cloud vault for my photos, and we both occasionally use the TV & free delivery so it's well worth it for us. Still agree with the discomfort over the slightly insidious way they go about getting you to sign up though.

I stopped sky TV earlier this year. And signed up with prime for TV and movies. I did a trial and for the price of a year up front it was it. I also got a fire stick which travels with me. So far so good

Would be interested to know what this includes / runs to each month as I already have a fire stick and Virgin's ever increasing prices are really starting to grate.

If you have not done the trial then it's £7.99/month or you get a month free if you pay for a year up front. So far I have watched some good series on it depends what people like. You can kodi to it but that's all I will say about that. As I said I will give it a year see what happens

Guess it depends what we (as a family) watch. My son is sorted as most of his stuff is on Netflix or iPlayer. The wife on the other hand may be trickier to please (just for a change [emoji1])

I worked out what programs I watched and to be honest I did watch a few on sky but for the money I saved it was not worth it I have found other ways to watch these profs if I want too. There is a section on prime which tells you what's on and you can take the stick abroad and watch certain content

Stuff ordered Thurs afternoon & a couple bits turned up this morn. & the other bits coming tomorrow (Sunday) So can't grumble.

Your right delivery is never free whether it be Amazon or eBay, but Amazon is guaranteed next day, and that is, for me, worth paying the £39 a year.

never had any trouble with them really. even when a next day delivery arrived a day late, they refunded the extra postal charge no bother.

last night, on the app. the first screen was about amazon prime but it was quite clear where to click for 'no thanks', on this occasion.

Well, she says she clicked nothing and then goes on to say she was in checkout and ticked a box so that is at least 3 clicks from the sales page. From observing friends and family I would say people often "wave" the mouse pointer about while they are "thinking" and often click and change or open things without realising and then you get "Oh how did that happen?"!!!!!!!
