North England Northumberland Wild Camping/Car sleeping

Hi All,

Having finally decided to book some time off work, I'm looking at going away somewhere for a couple of nights.

Now I'm ok with paying for a campsite, although considering its nearly that time of year where all the "Adorable" little angels are free to roam the countryside with their parents I don't particularly want to stay in a campsite unless I have too.
I've had a look at some Car parks that are out of the way but it seems the council there are just very against people sleeping in their cars. (I would say Over night sleep but the joys of working nights has screwed my sleep pattern)

Could any of you recommend places to Kip for a few hours either in the Car or Wild camp? even if I have to hop the border I am not too fussed.

Main purpose of the trip is Hopefully Stargaze (Weather dependent, Clouds can kindly do one) Landscapes & a quick trip to Lindisfarne.

All comments welcome and Appreciated!

It can be difficult to find a car park where you can unofficially spend the night. All those "no overnight camping" notices! But the funny thing is, I often don't notice them until the morning when i'm ready to leave! I mean, if you arrive in the dark it's easy to miss them.

To be honest, the only times I've been asked to leave in many years of camper-vanning have been on National Trust car-parks, and I can count those on the fingers of one hand. National Trust car-park attendants seem to be the worst jobsworths of the lot.

The biggest problem for me is that the places that look ideal to spend a quiet night in the van are also the ones often chosen by groups of lads arriving after pub closing time with their take-aways and cans of lager, or out to impress the girlfriends with loud music on the car stereo, which I find quite intimidating. This tends to be within a few miles of towns. If that happens I tend to quickly slide into the drivers seat and find somewhere else.

There are also numberous laybys and openings by the side of the road you can use.

a quick trip to Lindisfarne.

The problem with going out to Lindisfarne is it gets cut off by the tide!! If you 'stupidly' miss the last safe crossing, they can't kick you off the island or the nice big quiet carpark ;)

Never done it but we were going to go for a meal one evening at the pub but decided against it as the last crossing was 21.00hrs. Being in our campervan we did think about it but we're too honest! :D

Check out Ingram valley, just outside Powburn. Drive into the valley, cross the iron bridge, and follow the road around to the riverside. I've seen a few 'overnighters" there, and it's well out of the way of any kind of attendants.

Cheers people!

I'm a night owl these days, so it'll more than likely be me sleeping during the day...or whatever five mins I fall unconscious for :)

Not to fussed about Lads driving around, I'll just get out the car, crack open a cold one & wow them with stories of my Adventures...then steal their car keys & Girlfriends

Looking at BlindBurn & BarrowBurn for the Sunday night, around Lindisfarne for the Monday. And Ingram valley is sounding good too :)

Thanks again guys :)

I should have mentioned, when the weather really warms up Ingram is a good place to go adder spotting !

Hi where about's you traveling from?

Quickly reading your main locations are Barrow burn and Holy Island?

Is there any other must do locations?

I don't mind helping with a route or locations

Hi there, I'm coming up from Peterborough, looking to head up Sunday afternoon and pretty much drive around and find some other cool places!

My main plan is Stargazing, but that's weather dependent so long as all the clouds do one I should be happy enough. It'll be BlindBurn/BarrowBurn on the Sunday night. Lindisfarne Monday day time and if I can get back across in time then I'll maybe head up to kielder lake for the following evening. Maybe if time is on my side a quick mosey up to a Loch in Scotland :)

As you can probably see it's just a random Adventure :)

All help and ideas are appreciated :)

Blimey it's rural Northumberland....there will be 100's of places you can park up at night and have a kip !

Haha, you'd think that, but I'm looking to avoid the alleged harshness of Northumberlands party of car ticketeers. (I googled it)

Check you inbox :)

When you planning on doing your trip?

Hi All,

Much appreciated for the input, I went up last weekend...
Ended up sleeping in a layby/ rest stop just outside of Blindburn...on the boundary line for the MOD exercise area, you know the area that has signs that say "Don't be In here when red flags are up" (Guess what I woke up too)

Also ended up damaging the car somewhat, by wrecking my top mount & shocks...on those beautiful roads. So had too call the trip short -.-

I managed to get to Lindisfarne and that's pretty much it, sadly couldn't see the stars, was rather light up until 01:00 and I ended up falling asleep :crying: Just means i'll have to back I suppose

Thanks all for the Input, by all means, keep supplying me with Information ill be back up there sooner rather than later!

Much appreciated

Ed!
