Looking at buying a Nikon 70-200 2.8 vr ii...

Mint used looks to be around £12-1350 ish....

I see today that Jessops are selling new for £1599......

What would you choose ?

Would buy a grey market version new.

same price as Jessops who I can buy from Tomorrow.......

Christ things are bad. I remember getting stuff 50% less than Jessops before the pound fell to worthless.

See, I suppose it depends where you buy used from, but I'd say a saving of £300 for a lens is not to be sniffed at, particularly as some used places will give a warranty with the sale anyway.

Same as HDEW also ... how important is the cash? How important is a warranty, 1 or 3 years?

If you buying from a reputable used supplier (i see WEX have 2 around the £1300) then tit might be worth the saving. WEX used to give 12 months warranty on used equipment anyway I believe so it does minimise the risk. But for that amount of money I would want some warranty and peace of mind and if I coudnt get id spend the extra.

I just dont Gramps tbh...hence the post.

Normally, Id buy used becaue its generally half price, but this is to close to ignore and I cant decide.......

If it was £600 I wouldnt bat an eyelid and would buy used from here, but four figures is a big hard earnt lump of cold hard cash to drop with zero guarantee.....

I agree and think I would buy new with the best proven warranty I could get.

Used but nearly new. You get a lot for the money if you buy something that has had to next to no use. It is like buying an ex demonstrator car. Biggest hit of depreciation occurs the moment you drive it off the forecourt.

I would buy new.
Matt

2nd hand from a site that gives warranty. Best of both. Unless, is it norm for camera brands to give extended warranties (ie over 1 year) on new lenses?

Remember as well, buy on a credit card and if you can argue the item hasn't lasted as it should then you would have a decent shout for a section 75 claim. Just ensure you get everything documented when you buy it.

I would buy new for the sake of £300, agreed its not a cheap lens.
If you are going to keep the lens for life the buy new, if you are going to keep it for a short while then buy secondhand. :D

The difference is the warranty with a new lens will lie with Nikon, whereas the warranty with a secondhand lens would lie with the retailer.

Each may have different levels of cover, and the hurdles needed to jump through.

I'd go new. Not so much for the warranty as the 100% known history of the lens. Having said that, I wouldn't buy from Jessops, having had a couple of things from them that had been opened so possibly used - even if the use was purely as an in shop demo or a lokee see.

For £300 I would buy new. In your case I would phone the nearest shop (eg Milton Keynes) and ask them if there is any advantage in buying from the shop or should you just buy it online, they may throw in a few goodies, memory card or something, to get the deal?

I see a well known chain routinely offering Fuji lenses second hand with less than 10% off the best new price available from a UK dealer. Really, who would bother?

If a thing's second hand, it's worth a good deal less than new - no known history, condition issues, and unless it's from a reputable dealer, no warranty.

Just to bookend this thread, I bought a used one from Grays of Westminster for 1250 with an 18 month warranty, and its in unmarked and mint condition.....

Edit - removed comment as no longer relevant.

Good luck with your 'new' lens.
