Nikon D750 & D780

I left when I was 21 but came back about 8 years ago (y)

I've always enjoyed living in Derbyshire!
Plenty to photograph and the people are friendly!
I'm South Derbyshire but in about an hour I can be North Peak District!
Worked in Ashbourne but now in the city![emoji1]

I'm lucky, I live in the Peak District :)

So where was the waterfall? I'm south Derbyshire too, just north of Derby. I keep telling myself I need to get over to lumsdale with the camera as its only 15 mins away but I never seem to get around to it!

It is Lumsdale falls!
DE4 5EX post code, park on the road, walk up the hill a little and you will see the stone steps that take you to the falls!

How are you finding it? I think that's eventually the route that one of my bodies will end up. Intrigued by the resolution, especially for studio work.

I love it, especially coming from the D300/ D700 path. The itch was always there, but opted for the 750. Not that I didn`t like it, but all the recalls were doing my head in. I started getting the freeze up on first shot, so figured the time was right. Croppability is crazy, and the files don`t slow your `puter down much either. Low light, I`d say noise wise the 750 is better, but then it`s hard to compare unless you get very techy, and start downsizing the 810 files.

I reckon the 850 could be the one in 3 years time after all the recalls have been done. The 810 will take some beating and may still be the one I'll upgrade the 610 from, need to earn some pennies first. A 105 is going to be the next toy (hoping next year)

Yep and that`s about when the computer will need a rejig too, to handle the massive files ;) 105 looks nice (y)

It's never ending. Probably every other year there's a costly upgrade needed.Did the computer this year; bodies should be ok for a few more years; lenses, pretty much there; storage is an interesting one. I have enough capacity at the moment with 4TB of a mirrored external that I dump everything on, plus a similar capacity NAS, so if I get close to filling I'll add to that but shouldn't be for years.

Was just working out total capacity storage across my SD cards and clocked that an average 14bit RAW file is around 30mb (probably 25-53 depending) from the 750, so in theory should be getting over 2,000 on a 64gb card. In practice, I'm sure I usually top out at 1,500 ish and it only registers 1.1k on the display. Sound about right?

Have a family holiday coming up and was considering a couple more, but I have 160gb spread across 6 cards, so 80gb in use, which is ample for a beach holiday anyway. Hadn't thought about it much before now.

Nice Andy. I can see the groove you're getting into. There were a couple that looked a tad brighter than some in the sequence but it may have been just the order in the slideshow. I tend to process on the bright side too.

Yeah, I might have to even some out for final delivery.

Pretty sure only photographers will notice though lol

We will be visiting the Peak District this bank holiday weekend. As always we planned the trip late with no accommodation inside the peak district. We will be staying in Chesterfield.

Can anyone recommend some of the best places to photograph and time of the day? Any suggestions on parking and walking is greatly appreciated. Any route recommendations for scenic drive will be a bonus for me.

Hi there, just a few places to visit: Winnats Pass, Mam Tor and Derby and Lancs gliding club at Camp Hill all worth a look at, Buxton is a nice little spar town as well.
Regards,
Alan

Hah, I was considering looking on AirBnB for somewhere to stay in the peaks Sunday and Monday night

My home town

Well there's always the Crooked Spire in Chesterfield itself and there's the outdoor market which would be good for street type photos. Places within 45 mins drive that are good for photos are:-

Curbar and Baslow Edge (pay and display car park, but gets full quickly)
Lumsdale Falls (free parking outside Highfields school then a short walk down to the first fall)
Stanage Edge (free road side parking with easy walk to the top if you park at the Ringinglow side)
Bamford Edge (bit of a climb), parking near a style up a narrow ish lan)
Ladybower and Derwent Valley/Derwent Dam (free (I think) roadside parking)
Surprise View/Higgor Tor/Owler Tor (leads onto Stanage edge if you fancy a bit of a walk) (Pay and display parking)
Padley Gorge similar area to Surprise view etc (can park in surprise view car park and walk down, or park on the road on the other side of the gorge)
Monsal Head and Weir. Pay and Display car park, or park on the road opposite for free is there's space.
Mam Tor/Winnats pass (car park or park on the road for free if there's room)

Obviously all landscapes and so best in the golden hours.

YWP is only 40 mins from Chesterfield if that's your bag?

Slightly further afield you've got Chrome and Parkhouse HIll (park on grass verge), and the Roaches.

Magpie Mine and Solomons Temple can make for good photos too (y)

Oh, and Chatsworth House and Estate too :)

Thanks. First two are on my list and Buxton of course.

We might bump into each other then. If you see a guy with a D750 and 24-85 running around, you'd know who it is :D

Many thanks Toby for such a detailed reply with parking suggestions. I will try my best to be there in golden hours but with a 7 year old daughter, 65 year old mum and staying in Chesterfield it will be bit of a challenge. I will add your post into my notes.

Apart from photography, my new interest is driving. We did a 1250 miles 9 day road trip to Wales just a few weeks ago covering some of the most stunning B roads, mountain passes and A roads.

Read there are several fantastic roads in Peak District. I have the Cat and Fiddle, Snake Pass, Mortimer Road and a few others in mind to drive.

Looks like you`re pretty much sorted then :) I reckon I`m done for a while now (I hope) ;)

I was in the peaks on Saturday. I went to Baslow Edge (Curbar Edge on north side of the road). There is a NT pay and display car but there are a few free parking spaces on the right down the hill from the NT car park. For sunset (that didn't happen) I went to Millstone Edge which is at Surprise View NT car park. The car park is free after 6pm which it's great at this time of year with sunset just after 8pm. The heather around surprise view is pretty good at the moment, it's just a carpet of purple. The weather wasn't great on Saturday but that did keep the visitor numbers down in Bakewell. It was pretty windy up on a Baslow Edge with a few rain rain showers that were horizontal, even some upwards rain as the wind went ver the Edge. Thankfully it was blowing onto the edge rather than off it as I was nearly blown over a few times.

A nice run would be to go from Chesterfield up to Owler Bar, from Owler Bar through big moor (plenty of heather as Rob said) to Fox House. Fox House to Hathersage (passing Surprise View, which on a good day is stunning and has to be seen driving in this direction). Hathersage through Hope to Castleton and then up Winnats Pass to Sparrowpit. Then take the A623 towards Bakewell/Chatsworth/Chesterfield, then just after Litton turn right onto the B6465 Past Monsal head into Ashford on the Water. Then take the A6 through Bakewell to Rowsley then turn left towards Beeley and Chatsworth. Drive though Chatsworth to Baslow and then you can take the A619 back to Chesterfield. Should be a pretty nice drive. From Sparrowpit towards Monsal you could always take a detour through Tideswell.

Woohoo, d750 arrived safe and sound, on the same day as mastering d750 book, how's that for timing?
Better start homework, tempted to go out to play with tripod but think I'll get to know her a bit first
Any tips or advice welcome for things to watch out for or change settings etc
just need time to learn to get the best from her now. That'll be the hard bit
