The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Anyone doing anything exciting with their camera other than comparing stats?

I got a funky new keyboard with a view to setting up lots of macros to speed up workflow in LR... Then saw this Loupedeck thing and was mildly aggrieved, got a lot of wedding shots to get through and this would make processing the lot so much quicker.

We spent a few hours over at Thurstaston beach with the dog so I took my A7/50mm 1.8 with a capture clip to attach it to my belt.

These were shot in Jpeg and edited on my phone as we walked around.

I got a new screen protector for mine.
I also got a couple new adapters in actipation of new lenses from Rockycameras (blaming Alan for this). I also got an IR filter for my weekend road trip.

Also been learning to take better product shots of my gear to make them more attractive for sale on evilbay.

Daughter found a caterpillar in the garden this evening - light was fading and it was a bit of a pain hand-holding the macro rig with OCF, but got some nice shots. DOF to shallow on occasion, and sometimes not perfectly in focus - but a fun 30 minutes :D

Jesus,if your passing by my shop thur fri sat pop in with an A9 :welcome:
Ssssnake. I've got some days off next week during the week. I'm sure I'll be passing one day

well ive decided to try Sony, a bit nervous given past problems with the company's aftersales.
a7r11 arrived a couple of days ago. undecided as of yet what i think. need to use it a bit 1st, but ergonomics are not as good as dslr but it is smaller, the layout will take a bit of getting used to but this just comes down to muscle memory really. watch this space.....

Muscle memory was a concern for me after almost exclusively shooting Nikon

I went to a kids party last week and gave one of my A9's a blast. It was a good test seeing as I have shot only Nikon for 10+ years. Muscle memory isn't a concern any more! I'm not saying I won't reach for buttons which are not there but I did adjust reasonably well considering. That was my very first try of my own A9's.

I messed up a few shots and had a quite a few of my first shots oof. However, I know that's 100% user error as I'm just not used to the Sony System and I'm still not sure of their AF system. I was better by the end of the night

First impressions are excellent and I'm glad I switched. I'm planning on going to Cambridge for a day out on Sunday/Mondayand giving the other A9 a run out!

I've just switched to Sony with two A's from Nikon. The aftersales service isn't really a concern. I've purchased mine from Panamoz so no UK warranty anyway but from what I've heard about the Panamoz warranty it's superb! The ergonomics of the A9 will take some getting used to and for the next couple of weddings I'll still shoot with the D750's until I've got the A9's set up as I want them.At the point they'll be in the classifieds

The d850 is great spec wise but Sony already had that in the a99 mk2.

Its weird however why Sony Don't use Xqd cards that they invented?

I'm sure it is... I'm sure it's a responsive camera with good battery life capable of giving great image quality and it's a compact package too... That sounds like a good travel camera to me :D

Seriously!

I'm sure it is. But so are lots of other small cameras.

Give us some info to back up the statement. Otherwise it's just like me walking into a bar shouting "drink! Drink! Stella is amazing!"

What makes it such a good travel camera. Over your A7rii for example.

Probably my favourite travel camera was the x70 as it fits in a pocket and the image quality is superb.

The d850 will be better and A mount is dead, you cannot compare A mount to Nikon, Sony market E mount heavily because A mount would never sell as well as Canikon (losses must've been huge) so they needed something new to market.

Buffer is better so does not take ages to shoot and review pics.

Very good low light af. Better than the a7r2.

More responsive.

Proper silent shutter for candid shooting.

2x the battery life!

Mostly minor improvements but don't forget. This camera blows all a7 ones when shooting fast action stuff which i do too.

Its a do it all camera.

Almost like the d850 minus the mp

The last couple times I've been abroad I've taken my A7+35mm f2.8 and a compact camera for wider and longer shots and for times when the A7 is too much so a silent shutter A7/A9 might just fulfil another role but even if I had an A7/A9 with a silent shutter I'd probably still take a compact for the wider and longer shots. I have the TZ100 for that now and it shoots wider and longer and silently but it's not exactly in the same league for image quality.

thats better. :)

i think my shooting style must have slowed down. I'm never hitting the buffer on the a7rii.

the d850 is only 7fps so it can't get anywhere close to the a9 for action/sports. does look like a stonking dslr though. shame it costs so much more to get 2 extra fps though (battery grip el18b battery & charger).

As I'm at home again...

I've been looking at old Nikon lenses. I've never bought them before as they're so much more expensive than the Minolta, Olympus and Canon FD lenses but I keep reading how well built they are so that's got me interested. I've Googled but I can't seem to see any old Nikon v old Minolta Rokkor comparison reviews so I wondered if anyone here has ever compared old Nikon's to Rokkor's, Zuiko's or FD's?

Never compared them for IQ, but my old Olympus gear always seemed smaller & lighter than Nikon.

Two things come to mind about older Nikon gear...
  • Primarily used by pros, thrown in the bag when changed, so the condition of the lenses should be carefully assessed. The most battered lenses I remember have all been Nikon. On the other hand my mate has some fab old manual mint/used lenses, and paid accordingly.

Ken Rockwell on a couple of Sony lenses...

Sony 24-240mm...

"Nikon's excellent 28-300mm VR is the best of this breed, but it only fits Nikon and is bigger and heavier. It has a more useful zoom range and always has instant mechanical manual-focus override. You have to fiddle with settings with the Sony 24-240mm to get any sort of manual focus or override. Even if you found an adapter that worked to use the Nikon 28-300 on Sony, I seriously doubt that this Nikon lens would focus as fast or work as well as this Sony 24-240mm does on Sony cameras."

Really? I'd have thought that when set to AF you'd get full time manual focus over ride (is it called DMF) if set up for it although switching to manual focus would require switching on camera?

28mm f2...

"This is a swell little fast wide lens for full-frame, and a swell fast normal lens on APS-C. It's tiny, nearly weightless and works great. If you want a tiny fixed lens, here you go."

Has your 58mm Rokkor turned up yet?

I'll be interested in your thoughts especially as I should have bought it :D

Great stuff. I noticed it's no longer listed.

I'd really like a 55mm f1.4 MC but... there isn't one :D and I do have the 50mm f1.2 and f1.4 MD's.

I've been tempted to get a set of these metal MC's as I like the build and they sort of lessen my lust for classically styled Voigtlanders.

Oops read your post wrong.

I have used the f1.4 lens which worked pretty well on MC-11. But there are videos on YouTube showing 50L working with it too.

A customer friend came today ,he clears houses, got a load of film cameras lenses filters, going to have a look Tuesday, you never know could be a few gems there

Had a word with CEX manager today,he said as long as your happy with the camera that's ok but if you have any concerns bring it back under the 2 year guarantee, can't say fairer than that

Anyone any experience of the A6500?

GAS is biting after a long period of remission. I fancy something smallish with an EVF and fast focusing so I'm thinking of an A6500 + 55/1.8 + 24/1.8 combo as a flexible outdoors supplement to my D810+58/1.4 which has kept GAS at bay since I sold the A7R and lenses. I had an A6000 a while ago and like it.

Any alternative lens suggestions?
