Nikon D750 & D780

I know you have OEM OCD but I have the non art Sigma 85mm f1.4 and it's probably my favourite rendering lens. Dare I say it, better than my 70-200mm f2.8

That's some testimonial. A bit lighter too :D I like the idea of a 70-200 but I really just don't think I could handle one - just too heavy for me!

Do you actually find yourself shooting much at f1.4?

Can't say i really found a need to go less than f1.8 / 2.0.

Guess for those semi-long distance shots on a dull day could be handy.
It's all about the wafer thin DOF ;)

So light is getting low in the evenings and was taking some of Brendan today using the 70-200 F4. I forgot to put 2nd card in so all images were jpeg oops. Not sure I am happy with these TBH! They all seem a bit flat, mushy and have lost some detail. The light wasn't great, but it worries me what will happen when I lose even more light!!

Thoughts? Maybe I'm just being too fussy?!

I don't think you've lost any detail at the focus point, it appears to be very sharp still on the horse's nose.

Agreed, looks ok to me on the horses nose, just not enough DOF for the horse and person.

Shutter speed was 1/1000 sec... bet you'd get away with at least half of that. Help bring that ISO down and aperture smaller (more DOF)

Mr Picky.

Flat light = flat photos. Those look okay for dull overcast to me.

Photography is all about light, bad light bad/not so good photos. It's more about quality of light than quantity of light.

These don't look that bad at all though, just looks a dull day.

Look good to me dude. :)

Thank you! Can I have the 28mm back now :p

:D

LOL! Not sure you need it with photos like that! Still not sure if I need it or not. Status quo really, sell the remainder of my old Fuji kit and my 35 1.8 and see how close I can get to the 1.4. 'er indoors says I have to self fund at present :(

Been asked to help out at a wedding so need something wide again! But its not going to be used 'that' much so not sure whether to go older D lens or get a 24 or another 28!

A fast lens not used to its 'prime' purpose kinda defeats the point. I prefer using available light and hence need all the speed and light that I can get, so yes I DO find myself using it wide open and often asking for more. Interestingly, The Oly E1 + a stabilised pro lens linked to the cameras own 5axis gives a (claimed) extra 6.5 stops... astonishing. I'm almost tempted to jump ship...

Anyway, here is one fusing the 50mm 1.4 being worked hard in a garishly LED lit stage thingie at 1100iso at 1/50th. A larger version can be viewed here.

A few pics from a recent trip to New York.

Went there with my 14, 35 & 85 primes and it drove me mad changing lenses all the time, returned and sold my 85mm and looking for a mid-range zoom for trips like this in the future. Any suggestions?

Yeah, if going on holiday, just a little travel camera is all I need! :) Alternatively, the 28-300 would be fine. Nice classic bridge shot btw!

Hi all, I had a few days off, thought I'd take the o/h to the Verdon gorge to see the vultures, had a crap morning with them, either way too high or way too low for a good shot, after lunch (my lunch not theirs) we returned and they were everywhere. Here's I hope one of the better ones, I'm not at home atm so uploading to Flickr with some minor PP then d/l to phone then here, tell me if it's crap lol. 2017-09-08_10-42-24.jpg

24-85 VR - wonderful little lens.

Cool pics. I'm going there later in the year can't wait. I'll be taking my EM1 with 12-40mm f2.8 (y)

Thanks, I loved it out there, wish I had a couple more days to explore, definitely maximized our time though, a lot of walking!
How long did you go for? I'm going for 5 nights which will give us 4.5 days and worried it might not be long enough.

We arrived on MOnday at 2pm and our flight home was Friday at 10am. Could of done with another day. We walked 10-12 hours per day to see as much as possible, we did have the kids with us (7 & 10) but they didn't really slow us down.

Great experience and can't wait to go back.

Let me know if you want any tips/tricks etc for places to visit :)

We went for 7/8 nights quite a few years ago in film days. Loved the place.
I took F100, 20-35 2.8, 50mm 1.4 ai and 135mm Ai.
Late September and weather was great.
Most of my shots were with 20-35, 50 second and very few with 135.
Lots to see and plenty of photo opportunities. Enjoy.

Thanks. Will do, although we're pretty sorted as far as knowing where we want to go thanks. We've been told the red hop on/off buses are worth doing too so we're going to do that.

We're going last few days of Novemeber/First few days of December so am expecting it to be pretty cold. I'll be taking the 40-150mm on top of the 12-40mm but pretty sure I'll only end up using the 12-40mm.

So.. who prints their personal stuff here?

I've been meaning to do a photo book each year of my little girl and miserably failed so far. I bought the MPB to help me pull my finger out and do it. To date, big fat fail. I think I'll probably just need to tag what I want and re-edit to make all look consistent, sounds long-winded, pah!!

I use DS Colourlabs for everything these days.

I do for general prints. Others for wall art and Loxley for photo books/albums. Do you print often? Last lot I had done were prints of a family photoshoot I did, a good few months ago now.

I make my own prints on a cheap Pixma because I'm impatient. They're good enough for me and when I get it right as good as I've had from a commercial firm (the name of which I forget). For books I use Blurb which are OK considering their print method.

Caveat - I'm not picky!

I printed my own years ago, hated it. Profiles were never right and quality terrible. DSCL changed my life. Much cheaper and quality just no comparison. But certainly get the convenience factor if you don't print much.

I can never understand the technical hoops you have to jump through for on-line print ordering to get the sizes I want. And printer profiles fry my brain!

I've only done 3 prints for my wall at work, but that's only cos my wife 'nagged' me to ;)

I keep meaning to do a photo book but never get round to it. Some days I think my photos are good enough, then other days I think they're a pile of pants o_O

Every time I start putting photos together for a book I select more than I'll need. Then I start whittling the dross out - until there are none left. :(

I did a 365 project for each of our 2 boys and printed a book of the best 80-100 for each of them at the end of the year. I just used Snapfish, it did ok for what we wanted and was cheap enough to get a few copies for grannies etc. I also do a book at the end of each year of general family stuff like the boys, holidays, days out, some of my favourite landscape stuff etc.

Having had several near misses I've finally properly lost the eye piece. Looks like it's probably somewhere in the deer park I visited this morning. Oh well it took two years so it's probably done quite well!

I've thought of a photo book for some wildlife projects but I've not yet got around to it.

What's bizarre is that I've not had the slightest hint of mine coming off, yet when I borrowed my mate's D7200 for the weekend the eyepiece came off twice
