Just watched the keynote speech for the new iPhones. I'm not a fan of iOS and don't feel like getting locked into the apple economy when I already have plenty tied in with google and android already.
The new cameras in the iPhones look interesting though. New sensors with hardware noise reduction in the imaging processor on their new SoC. What I was in two minds about was the "studio lighting" options they have added, it looks cool, but it is quite obviously just an evolution of filter technology tied to the facial recognition software. It is touted in a way that will make those who don't know think they are getting different lighting setups in their shots when they're not. No doubt the effects will look good to a degree, but it's just another way of faking things in photography being made easier.

For the price, £1000, you can (almost) get a 6s and an rx100 v... I'm still using the 6s and I see no reason to upgrade for these new ones, I also don't like the lack of Touch ID on the x

If you look at the price of a contract it includes the phone price. I worked out a while ago that if you buy a phone sim free add say Tesco deal keep it 4 years you are in profit. Will have to work it out for these new ones.

Nice bit of kit. My S8+ cost nearly that much, but really these things are as powerful as midrange laptops now!
No one is twisting anyones arm to purchase thankfully. If i did buy one, then i'd be buying it in the US for sure. (presuming the LTE stuff plays nice)

Like the design of the Iphone X but through the Apple upgrade scheme it's £50 a month with my SIM only deal on top. I'll probably just get the 8.

Not without a hiccup!

Facial recognition fail at launch  :$

Gimmicks, hype, un-needed features, clever marketing, all the "in" crowd want it quickly. Yep its a new high end phone

That wasn't the fail everyone is making it out to be. It's the same as the touchID security feature, if its not been unlocked for too long or just been turned on or restarted, you have to enter the PIN number the first time.
Looks like an embarrassing launch fail to me!

I'll be sticking to my 6 Plus. Don't see the need to upgrade personally.

Apple seem to have dropped behind with technology the last few iterations of their phones.

+1 Beautiful screen, good battery life, powerful, fast and responsive. Its not like it went rubbish overnight just because newer phones came out

It's assumed they'll be plenty of applephobes willing to upgrade, but I. Think that price point might just make some think, unless there's a bundle put together with the tarrifs.

I'm still using a 6S and may be tempted by an iPhone 8, but no way I could justify an iPhone X (work phone, but I am the IT and phones admin, so I get to choose for myself :))

Only got my 6S last December. I've never upgraded to the latest model, got my 3S when the 4 came out &my 4S when the 5 came out. Saved a fair bit of cash that way.

I have recently just thought that is the way to go, however the downside to the is you will never really get to know how fast the phone is in day 1. The OS and apps gets more bloated overtime so an older phone are slower.

I just got my 6S two days ago - dragged kicking and screaming in to the modern age :)

A mate up North, we'll call him 'Dick', will probably buy the X as soon as it is available, if not sooner. He gives the impression that Old Steve and him were best mates, dropping his name as often as possible...

I was talking to someone not into phones the other day, not that I am by any stretch of the imagination, and saying that some of them are about £6-700, and then this iPhone X appears for £1k.

And then the advert on TV atm kept on popping into my head where people are dropping their phones and breaking the screens.

I hope anyone who spends hundreds, possibly 1k or more on a phone, enjoys and makes as much use as possible.

I saw a reply by someone with regard to the face recognition opening the iPhone, and chap said, "so my girlfriend could point the phone at my face while I'm sleeping and then read all my messages! No thanks."

I have an iPhone 6s Plus which does me just fine. I've had it for two years now and don't have any plans or updating it any time soon. I'm sure the new ones are good phones but the features that I use are all present on my current phone and it works perfectly.

The new Samsung Note 8 does look very nice, too. As long as it don't blow up...

Curious. My motorola XT890 that I bought 4 years ago would unlock with face recognition with (apparently) similar reliability to the ecksphone. I slightly miss that phone - it was actually pretty darn good - even though my lumia 640 is faster.

"ecksphone" doesn't work, you would have to write it as tenphone.

There's nothing new about the iPhone x you can't get with an android apart from the gimmicky camera stuff.
How can that be true? You can't get iOS on an Android phone.

I'm an iPhone fan currently with a 6s plus. The new X just doesn't have enough new stuff to make me spend £1k on it.

The face recognition also has attention awareness, it won't unlock unless it can see you're paying attention. Saw a demo, it's really impressive.

There is one on which you can. But iOS doesn't do anything that android can't, apart from probably iMessage.

I think it knows if you eyes are opened and it needs it to be open to unlock the phone. Similarly she can place your finger over the touch ID whilst you are at sleep too.

Maybe that is the very reason they introduced it
But you can disable face and finger with 5 clicks in iOS 11 so easy to revert to passcode if necessary.

Not disputing that but if all your devices are OS X or iOS as mine* and all your relatives have iOS devices then "it just works", communication between apps and devices and iMessage is a killer factor :~)

If you want something just for the camera I just picked up the huawei p10+ and the camera on this is pretty damn good.

I have the honor 8 with almost the same camera set up and agree with how good they are.

Killer factor is that a phone works for communication! Don't tell anyone with an android phone about that, they'll all buy iPhones!

I've never failed to be able to communicate with my Android either...
