The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

It takes a special kind of idiot to pay $2000 for a lens that produces images this;

What lens was used to take this photograph?

I just ordered that today! I might do a comparison between the f/4 & the 2.8 since we will have both lol

I also used to own both the FE 70-200 f4 G and 70-200 f2.8 GM but never got around to comparing them back to back previously, will be interesting to see your thoughts.
Going completely off memory the FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM didn't seem as sharp as the f4 version, but that was probably because I shot them wide open f2.8 vs f4.0, so you could argue that's an expected outcome.

The 2.8 should still be sharp wide open. The only difference would be shallower depth of field.

I agree, my current one is tack sharp.... perhaps I was just overly critical of my previous copy as I was in the process of moving from Sony to Fuji :D

First image to get above 5,000 views on flickr so thought I'd share it on here! Taken once Southport Airshow had finished, they had a short firework display afterwards. Taken with A7 + 16-35mm.

That is lovely :D

Paul has a Helios 44, very sharp and brilliant lens for what it is, but $2k for a modern one - 'steep'. I keep looking at 50+mm lenses but haven't settled on what I want.... Hmm. Maybe that means I don't actually need one!:) Been spending too much money on bikes lately.

Talking of which went for a ride along the beach yesterday evening with the little zeiss c-biogon 35mm.

Sony 12-24mm v other stuff thread...

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1498485/0

The Sony looks to be a very good lens :D
Sure is and I believe its actually smaller/lighter than its competitors too? :)
The FE 16-35mm f2.8 G Master is also a very good lens.
Looks like Sony is churning out some quality glass!
They just need to bring out the telephoto prime lenses to cater for the Professional sports/wildlife shoots and that's another tick in the box. ;)

I'm wondering how quick the continuous eye auto-focus is on the a7rii. How quick does it pick out and eye and lock on? As quick as it acquires normal focus? Also does it hold on well?

An example of a situation where I think I could be 'handy' for me would be my kids running/playing around the garden/beach and me firing off a few shots with a lovely 85mm Sony lens, 46mp and all with perfect eye focus..... am I dreaming? Is it really just for more posed shots?

I have owned the Sony A7RII in the past and the Eye-AF is pretty good, it will lose lock if the subject is moving too fast though. My best advice would be to test it out if possible.
Which Sony 85mm? 1.4 GM or 1.8 as the GM has to move a lot more glass which results in a slower AF lens.

Thanks for your reply. Just dreaming at the mo but from reading reviews I think the 1.8 would be more than fine for me and is cheaper and smaller.

The FE 85mm f1.8 is a cracking lens, I believe its comparable to the Zeiss Batis f1.8 :)

All these photos with 50mm lenses aren't helping me one bit. I currently have a gap between 35mm and 85mm and I have been looking for something as a general walk about lens however I am torn between the 24-70 of the versatility, the 55mm f1.8 (generally well received) for a fast prime with AF (I do have to admit to be partial to a bit of bokeh, sorry) or going completely mental and getting an old MF lens. LCE have a 40mm f1.4 Nokton (Leica M) in at the moment which is tempting me

Love his comment...

"The thing I would really like to tell photographers is to a) Listen to your gut and b) Don't worry so much about gear."

As pointed out by one poster...

"Uses $2,700 camera, $1,400 lens, $2,900 housing, and $2,000 lighting + misc. equipment." :D

I love the look of the classic Voigtlanders but I'm put off by the reports of poor edge performance and as even my lowly Rokkors are sharp across the frame when stopped down I've held off. I've only had one Voigtlander, a 35mm f2.5 Color Skopar which I used on a Bessa and stupidly sold, I've always fancied another but reviews and feedback on A7's are few and far between for these lenses.

I wish the new Voigtlanders for Sony mount had the same look as the classics but sadly they've changed them :(

At one time my most used lens was a Sigma 12-24mm :D

I do think that wides are amongst the most difficult to use well but when you get it right they are also amongst the most rewarding :D

I'll look forward to seeing your shots :D
