The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Tell you what @jonneymendoza, you've done well getting the wide angle shot from the 12-24 blurred at 12mm. That's hard to do ;0)

Nice lenses though.
This shot should be better. Corners are nice! Better than the samyang 14mm corners

I've got a Samyang 12mm and don't like it much. Mushy corners and overly damped focus ring - aka stiff. I usually like manual lenses but not this one. Hubby has used it more than me.

That's a shame. I really liked the Samyang 12mm I had for my A6000. Never found the focus stiff and was sharp across the frame (well, as sharp as a 12mm frame can be anyway!). Maybe you've just been unlucky?

The reason why i purchased both these zooms is for travelling.

When i was travelling recently with just primes, i was ok but when changing lenses i got the sensor dirty and also lost time in doing so for obvious reasons. When travelling my style varies i.e i dont just stick to one focal length. i tend to shoot stuff Ultra wide(14mm samyang). 25, 55 and even sometimes portrait mode 85mm and its a bit tiresome changing lenses all the time and because the sensor is easily wide open, it is easy to get dirty.

i had to wet clean the sensor when i got home.

My plan now is to use a combination. For day time i will use 24-70 and 12-24 and at night i will bring/use one of my primes for night time photography or if i want to be desecrate.

What are your pros and cons of using zooms vs primes?

Ive changed lenses on the beach, open fields, urban enviorments, you name it!

I too have changed lenses everywhere, I've changed lenses in conditions I could hardly stand up in :D

When going abroad I've always taken just the one lens, with my 5D I took my Sigma 50mm f1.4 and with my A7 I've taken my 35mm f2.8 and I use something else for wider and longer shots.

I'm curious Alan, why would you use the 35mm with the A7 if you used to use a 50mm with the 5D, I guess my question is why the change in FL preferences

Back when I had DSLR's I didn't have a 35mm lens. I had a 20mm f1.8 and 50 and 85mm f1.4's. OK I could have bought a fast 35mm but I didn't :D Actually my most use lens for a time was the Siggy 12-24mm.

These days I like the 35mm f2.8 because although f1.4 would be nice in reality f2.8 is just about enough and enables the body and lens combination to be very compact and light. I have the excellent Sony 55mm f1.8 but these days I sometimes find 50/55mm a teeny bit tight so it really depends on the mood I'm in :D I may choose a 50/55mm for a day out especially if I think I'm going to want to take a picture of my Mrs or might want to try and fill the frame as much as possible with any interesting thing I come across like a flower or some other interesting little thing, a 50mm might be better than the 35mm f2.8 for that kind of thing and there's the perspective change too and DoF but on holiday I generally find these days that the 35mm is more of a do it all as it gets more of the scenery in :D and can be used for people shots too :D and all it really lacks against a 50/55mm is possibly but not necessarily the ability to fill the frame more and get razor thin DoF.

The old MF 50/55mm lenses I use are about the same length as the Sony 55mm f1.8 once the adapter is fitted so bulk wise they're ok.

To be honest I can live with anything between 28 and 55mm with 28mm being a bit wide and 55mm sometimes being a bit tight.

I have been thinking about taking a manual lens with me the next time we go to Thailand, maybe an old 50/55mm or maybe the new Sony mount Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 if it gets good reviews and if I can force myself to part with the thick end of £1k.

I'm wondering how quick the continuous eye auto-focus is on the a7rii. How quick does it pick out and eye and lock on? As quick as it acquires normal focus? Also does it hold on well?

An example of a situation where I think I could be 'handy' for me would be my kids running/playing around the garden/beach and me firing off a few shots with a lovely 85mm Sony lens, 46mp and all with perfect eye focus..... am I dreaming? Is it really just for more posed shots?

Can anyone else offer an insight into the effectiveness of the auto eye focus?

It's okay but it doesn't always nail focus when it's highlighted with a moving target... it's more accurate with still subjects for obvious reasons, it's also subject to distances. Good but has limitations.

I have a Zuiko 125mm f3.5 and Rokkor f2.8. I haven't used the Zuiko since I got the Rokkor. The Rokkor is good enough for me but to be honest I've only used it a few times on both my A7 and MFT so I can't see spending any money on an AF being worth it for me.

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to use it for a try out sometime.

Thanks for the taking the time to reply to what probably seemed a daft question. There was a reason behind it, honest. Currently my bag consists of the 16-35 f4, Sigma 35mm art and FE85mm f1.8. I did have a Canon 70-200 f4 L IS which has just sold in the classifieds. my plan was to replace with the Sony 70-200 f4, however I am conscious that on a normal day out, I would have a gap between 35mm and 85mm and have been trying to decide whether to forego the 70-200 for now (I also have a Sigma 120-300 Sport, so although its a beast and looks a little daft in the Sony, it will work for sport and wildlife) and get either the 55mm f1.8 or 24-70 f4 to fill the gap. Prior to the Sony I had the 35mm on my 5Diii most of the time, only switching to the 70-200 when I needed to get closer

Only have the 55. Brilliant lens
this but I'm thinking of getting rid of it and my 24-70mm f4 for a 35mm f1.4.

End game of having the 35mm f1.4, batis 85mm (although tempted to go to the G 1.4 too) and 135mm G when it comes.

Having owned both the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 and Sony 85mm f1.4 GM I would say you can't go wrong with either :)

what are peoples opinions on the 35mm f1.4?

I had a Sigma 35mm back when I was on Canon that I liked the length of but missed focus a lot.

Very good when you have a good copy!
theres an open box quality one in Wex's used section that tempted me but if they're a bit hit and miss it could be this one was returned for being a miss.
