The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Saw a video from Matt granger about the af tracking on the d850 and not only is it poor vs a A9 but probably worse off then the a7r2?

On not so great lighting it can't track at a all! I'm talking shadow/cloudy settings. Even the a7r2 tracks brilliant in a cloudy day /shadow area.

Plus the buffer rate was below par of my 5d4 it seems despite having a xqd card?

Matt had to shoot jpg in order to get better buffer.

His d5 blew away his d850.

O and that blackout in view finder. Yuck!

But wasn’t the D850 supposed to have the same AF system like the D5/500?
I suppose it’s just a sacrifice you have to make to gain greater resolution / DR / ISO over the Sony A9?

Glass screen protector sounds like a good idea. I put a big scratch on my a6000 about a year ago. I can see the same happening with the 6500 too - it gets wrapped up in a beany hat and goes in my bike bag quite a lot! Not bothered about the touch screen not working as I don't use it.

It appears they gimped it so that it doesn't affect d5 sales
From all the marketing and interviews it wasn't supposed to be gimped, it was supposed to be a direction change from Nikon in that they have made a camera which did it all irrespective of the model number.
It will sell well as its a polished product just like most new DSLR releases, but that should be expected given that DSLR have been perfected and tweaked for decades now. :)

Do glass protectors work for screens that have touch screen?

if and i mean a big IF the A7r3 or A9r has better res and same AF system as the A9 then it will look like a better camera then the D850.

I wonder how the D850 compared to the A99mk2!!!

Touchscreens are capacitive these days so it might still work if the protector is thin enough. On the 6500 it's only used for the focus point selection and I don't use it that way anyway.

Find that very hard to believe when most dslrs I've used outperform the a7r2 AF.

I have to agree but I guess it entirely depends on which attribute of the AF system your comparing, I believe that the actual AF acquisition (lock) of the Sony A7RII is spot on and very quick compared to DSLR(s).
But AF tracking might not be up to DSLR standards, still workable though.

I believe the Sony A7R III will come in at around 50mp with the A9R heading towards the 80-100mp region :D
As Sony has proven with the Sony A9, the AF system and general speed/performance niggles issues are gone.....

With the original A7 range, the A7II range and now the A9 on sale and soon no doubt we'll have the A7III I wonder if Sony will drop the original cameras? I wonder how long they'll keep everything going?

I wonder how well each sell?

Would anyone reading this consider buying one of the first generation cameras?

The original Sony A7 is still a great camera and I never felt I needed more IQ/DR/ISO from it, I nearly bought one instead of the Sony RX100 III during the Amazon PrimeDay deals but opted for the RX100.
Sony are is a good position and will no doubt be keeping a eye on sales numbers for each model..... perhaps they will end its life-cycle once the A7III comes out but who knows... Sony have so many Axxxx bodies out and still for sale. :D
The Sony A7, 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8 is a really and small setup for the actual IQ you get out of it..... I am seriously still considering this combo.
Sell the RX100 III and stick a iPhone for snaps.....

As you may know I have the 35mm f2.8, 55mm f1.8 and 28-70mm kit lens and as I only ever use single point focus, never use tracking and never shoot bursts it's just about perfect for me. I use manual lenses at least as much as I use the 35 and 55mm AF lenses and probably more and again the A7 is just about perfect for this slower use.

The A7 and 35mm f2.8 in particular is a very small and capable package, it's the size of a MFT camera and lens.

So was the Canon 1DX, 5D etc and for some they will need need any more, however time and technology moves on, for those who are happy with the older models, there will be plenty of used versions around as others upgrade to the latest and greatest. By continuing to sell the older versions new at a lower retail, they further devalue the used market and make the upgrade jump even greater. If you looked around you could probably pick up an early A7 for £4-500, now thats a lot of camera for someone. I get why they've done it so far as they are trying to get greater volumes into the market place, however I think now may be the time to start dropping the earlier ones. Otherwise I dread to think how much the A7riii / iv will be

I'm debating getting the 35 F2.8. Any good? Will I regret not having a 1.4?

We had my little sisters' wedding this weekend. I was an usher so off duty from photography but took my A7 with 50/1.8 and Samyang 14/2.8. The pro photographer was my wife's cousin who I normally shoot weddings with so of course I ended up working with him! I've just sent a few to my phone over the weekend to share with friends etc so I need to revisit the raws when I get home but I'm still impressed with the old A7 and FE 50.

The bride and groom with my little boy who was one of the ushers(FE50/1.8)

Samyang 14/2.8

I can't remember the ISO but this was late into Saturday night in very low light so to lock focus at all was an achievement (even more so considering I was slightly 'less than sober'!)

I've got a load more to edit but thought it would be good to share what a comparatively cheap setup can do.

I've posted a lot of pictures taken with the 35mm f2.8 but finding them in this thread will be a task and they've probably been removed by Photobucket.

Best thing would be to look at reviews. I think they'll say that it's a very good lens and very sharp although maybe not to 55mm f1.8 levels, but still sharp. The centre sharpness is good at f2.8 but to get really good sharpness across the frame you're going to have to stop it down a bit maybe to something like f5.6 but that'll depend on what you think is sharp enough.

I think it's a very good lens and of course being f2.8 it's compact and makes for a compact camera and lens package.

They're still selling all five versions of the RX100 as they then have all the price points covered. But doing that with three different cameras in each version seems a bit more of a stretch.

But having said that these products are made up of a kit of component parts and I therefore don't see much problem in mixing A7, A7II and A9 and all the variants in production. In fact one of the companies I worked for used to make different products all day long... as long as the batch sheet matches the parts in the bin and the test rig has the right options... no problemo :D

As long as it makes sense to the marketing and sales people and keeps the money coming in.

The Rumor site says there's a firmware update coming including a fix for the star eater issue.

Read all about it...

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr3-...re-update-fix-star-eater-issue/#disqus_thread

I’ve also heard rumours of S-Log coming to the Sony A9 via a firmware update too.

I think Sony should work on a few other tiny niggles while they are at it.

The touch-screen functionally.
- enable touch GUI
- enable touch for photo reviewing including pinch to zoom

Fix the rare banding phenomenon under high frequency LED lighting

Any other improvements welcomed :D lol
