ok spent a long time researching backups... currently i backup 'mirror' usb drive to usb drive. This is not really good enough as there are periods im not backing up... im going to get myself a synology NAS so locally i can backup more frequently BUT i really want to get my uploads sorted to the cloud. I was using Amazon Drive but there web client always crashes and takes for ever... im looking for a simple solution to say copy everything from this UBS drive to my online drive... you would think this would be easy! everything i look at requres a desktop app installed to sync from there - but with a 256SSD this is pointless! any suggestions? I looked at backblaze which on the serface of it looked good BUT then realsed its got a large number of floors so wont suit.. Hubic seems the best value option but only seems to alow individual file uploads not folders...

Hubic does backups and file sync with folders no issues with that.

it might get a bit stressed with an external usb drive if you don't have it connected when the local client runs though.

I simply have a root folder called HUBIC on my little HP microserver,
Hubic syncs that folder and all its sub folders to the cloud every hour so the whole folder is up in the cloud, it is now about 1.5TB
Also every day at midnight hubic does an incremental backup of the folder (just changes) and saves that to the cloud, keeping up to 10 changes of files.

Yes this is the problem , i cant install the desktop drive as ive only got a 256ssd but about 3tb to sync.. on the mac just cant seem to work out how i can upload the data only from a usb drive (their web client wont do folders and max's out at 5gb.. ) any other suggestions? i cant be the only person looking for a cloud solution backup?

Google drive will do this very easily I believe, every time I plug in a memory card it asks if I want to back it up to the cloud.

From what I under stand Google Drive is closing down and will be no more come next year

Google photo is free and unlimited if you're happy with 16mp files.

I use synology DSj216 to store all my local files, I only use my computer drive for data I'm working on. It's a mirrored drive so if one drive fails I won't lose my data, hopefully.

I then have the synology backing up to a cloud storage service as an additional backup of my data, it's only about £5 a month for 512GB.

I would really recommend the synology over others.

Thanks Synology looks like the best option so far.. how does storing images on the NAS work with lightroom? is it poor? looks like synology also has the abililty to copy to hubic... hum..

I've been using lightroom from the synology for months now and had no problems.

Just export as normal from lightroom - and on the dialogue that allows you to select the location select your NAS.

You'll need to setup your NAS as a network drive though first. Let me know if you need help when you get it.

P.S. If you want to have your working Lightroom catalogue on the NAS Im not really sure how fast it will be. It's likely going to run slower than having your catalogue locally on your computer due to your local network speeds. Personally I'd use it for backing up your catalogue and exporting your jpegs.

Yeah you need to buy a NAS and stop with the USB storage

You can backup usb and network drives to CrashPlan. It also does unlimited versioning and doesn’t mind if the drives aren’t connected in future backups - some backup services insist on drives being connected every so often otherwise the backup gets deleted.

I just wish there was a CrashPlan client for synology so that I could run the backup from there.

sorry for not being up to date - synology i think it will have to be .. working locally on the mac - do the edits then move the files to the synology - which should then back up to hubic... now to find some guides!!
