All things related to Apple phones & tablets

Well the laddies ipad 3 has been and gone.
After just over a week of ownership he accidentally dropped a toy on it and the screen cracked.
Repair not economical so off to ebay it went as spares or repair.
Food for thought for any future ipad purchase for the kids.

Well in my store preorders for the X are much better than they were for the 8 models.

Initial reviews of the X are generally positive, few grumblings over FaceID and bugs, but looks like it's going to do well

My demo models are arriving tomorrow. I am forbidden to turn them on though till 8AM on Friday.

Why?

A number of people have already received there demo units and turned them on, there are a number of videos on YouTube about them

Correct. In fact I was just reading the review on The Verge. They are reviewers given the phones by Apple to review. No one in any retail store, anywhere in the world is permitted to turn them on till 8AM local time. If they do, Apple issue fines and, in the case of the company I work for, its disciplinary.

Well the X is gorgeous!

No plans to get one far too much, but thought that the 'indent' at the top for face recog and sound would be a bit annoying.

My 6 is a little tatty but still ok, tempted to upgrade and the 7 32gb is £549 but tbh aside from being a bit faster and shinier, not sure its worth it!

The 6 is handicapped by the smaller amount of RAM, you should be considering a 6s or newer.

Can't update my iPhone as not got 2.5GB of storage :(
It’s a bit long after this post, but if you use iTunes you should be able to update a ‘full’ iPhone through iTunes.

More bug-fixes I hope! 11's been a flop from a stability perspective!

There are however a lot of cases of this being reported, a lot of them from tech sites.

I would rather, and recommend to err on the side of caution and know what you're potentially going to introduce, rather than upgrade blindly like so many people do.

Upgraded to an 8 plus for the missus and an X for myself the other day both have been updated to the latest versions but not noticed any issues as yet.

The cameras on these new phones are pretty awesome.

So Apple finally got found out and admits that it has been deliberately throttling older iPhones ... including iPhone 7

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-42438745

It was throttling when the battery is in a degraded state, it's a good method of efficiency and used in many areas of IT, and if they'd disclosed this in the first place they wouldn't be under fire for it now.

Not a great time for apple recently in my opinion....

I don't suppose you fancy mentioning the justification for it do you? Or is it just an excuse to have a bash at Apple?

It alters people's perceptions of the performance they can expect from the device, Apple wasn't right to not disclose that as it could easily have been put across as an efficiency update at WWDC.

It's also not right that the tabloids aren't stating the reasons in the headline, give it a week and it'll be forgotten...

Didn't bother to read the linked material?

I did, and I already knew about the story. I was curious at to why you posted about it in such an obviously biased way. There is a genuine reason for what they have done, however you didn't seem interested in putting that point across.

As an iPhone 7 owner I object to the fact that action has been taken to reduce the performance of my phone without my knowledge.
There is nothing biased about my post, the link had all of the information which totally backs up my statement, which is 100% factually correct ... not that that would stop you having a personal dig.

Of course there's a genuine reason, to make you buy a new one ;)

If their software updates were going to brick an older phone, the obvious choice would be to not roll out the upgrades to those models of handset. Rather than roll it out, but cripple the CPU. Reports are showing that they're more than halving the clock speed of phones.

Maybe fine, *if* they were up front about it. Could've even had a push notification to those impacted suggesting they had the battery replaced to avoid the issue.

Or just replace the battery if it’s knackered...
Yes. The linked bbc post says “deliberately slow down some models of the iPhone as they age“ should say “as the batteries age” and is just as misleading as their broadcast comments yesterday.
However, while I agree Apple should have been more upfront, that would not have stopped the furore when they popped up messages on your phone telling you that you would get better performance if you replaced your battery.

I understand the logic of what they did but like several things recently, it's hasn't been placed well with informing the customer e.g give them the option (iTunes 12.7 anyone?)

Now, let's say you have a phone with AppleCare and this throttling means you only realise that your phone battery is on the way out after AppleCare has expired: can of worms......
