I was sorting out some much older paperwork and came across two old refund notifications & attached cheques........no idea why I had not paid them in???

Well, I thought no problem the HMRC will do a reissue..........afteral they will chase anyone from years ago owing tax, don't they?

The answer was "sorry as they predate 2013" no can do. FWIW they are from 1992 and 2006, so lesson learned :( !

Unless anyone has an insight on whether there is route/course of action that the 'agent' I spoke to may not have been aware of??? As I say lesson learned........... especially as the amount those modest would be nice and helpful now. C'est la vie.

Present them to the bank anyway, they might go through. AIUI cheques arent hand processed anymore, worth a try.

In common AFAIK with all such 'official' cheques they state a 6 months limit/limitation on presentation to a bank :(

I think that is so it makes it easier for them to trace back through records. I'd present it :)

Cheques aren't legally valid after 6 years. Most banks refuse anything older than 6 months though. ;)

Btw, I hope they weren't for a large amount?

SWMBO was a bank manager..........it would be a fruitless exercise presenting them

As I said modest, total approx £300. Not insignificant so would have been very helpful now because of changes in circumstances last year. My own fault back then at the times I received them but that is life so no tears over spilt milk (so to speak) just :banghead:

Keep them, in 25 years when cheques are a distant memory they will sell on ebay!!

In 25 years time................................I may be a distant memory, or if lucky(?) will be nigh on 89 y.o..................or at the very least, likely unconcerned ;) :sulk:

Surely if they never got cashed then you're still in credit and due a rebate? Unless they added it back another way when calculating other rates?

This in broad terms was my interpretation.

As far as I understand it HMRC will either send a cheque or make a code adjustment, not both. And it seems that once a cheque is issued that is the matter closed i.e. cashed or not 'they' count it as settled.

NB If they somehow detected an uncashed cheque and did a code adjustment? ~ At this distance in time I cannot recall any such code adjusted correction(s) but surely 'they' if they looked into it could clarify if that was ever the case or not?

The HMRC guy I spoke to was quite emphatic that any such claim for a re-issue of an uncashed cheque as at today is only as far back as 2013 i.e. 4 years.

The only way that I am aware of to contact HMRC is via phone or on the website...............I need to have look at the website to see if, like many companies, there is "contact portal" to ask for help on this because definitive though the guy was I wonder if he was just unsure how to handle the enquiry and fell back on a scripted response for & about what I think is (now) called a P800 claim for overpaid tax???

So, if anyone knows what other route(s) I can pursue to get this looked into more deeply that would be appreciated :)

Cheeky sods, they'll chase you for money but when it comes to giving it back...

To be fair they did, and 4 years is a reasonable time to go back.

Found them very good when I messed up my tax and underpaid.

You need to write to them.

Photo copy the original letters/cheques

Write a letter explaining the situation and giving all relevant details, tell them you would like the cheques reissued (no need to muddy the waters by making mention of your previous phone call top them about this matter ;))

Enclose with your letter the copies you made of the originals (don't send the originals with your letter in case they get "lost")

Send the letter special delivery/recorded signed for.

Good idea and insight, thanks for the guide and recommendation :)

Mount them in resin with a motivational message and hang them on the wall :)

years ago now, i tried post dating a cheque for a couple of weeks ahead for my payday. The bank cashed it anyway and told me they don't bother looking at dates on cheques.

I received some HMRC Tax refunds about 6 year ago which were quite large and just came out of the blue one day.
I called them up as I didn't really understand why I had got them as they were considerable.
They were from about 3/4 years previous as well, I looked at my payslips which at the time I was PAYE via an umbrella company in my early days as an IT Contractor.

They looked perfectly normal to me so I queried they just said adjustments and calculations I just said ok.
I just paid them in and moved on with a complete lack of understanding.

Worth a try I suppose but I reckon the answer will be the same.... especially as one of the cheques the OP is talking about is now 25 years old!

I got a tax rebate 10 days ago.
First ever.
Can't think what possessed the OP so long. :)

To make you feel better

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/...tion-calculator-value-money-changed-1900.html

£300 in 2006 is £411 now
£300 in 1992 is £591.54 now

you must've been minted in the 90s to not cash a check worth the equivalent of £600 :D

I said the two totaled approx £300......and the 92 one was under £100

FWIW in 92 I had started a new job in late 91 after 6 months out of work so a lot going on........as for 06 well a house fire in 05 (not major but damaging) > house builders in to repair the damage > selling it.......meant a lot on my plate including putting one heck of a lot of my stuff into storage.

Sometimes things just get 'lost'.
